BTW, the insurance mentioned in the article as inexpensive runs about $10.00 per $100.00 in value.

"gun-related incidents cost the city roughly $63 million every year"
As a responsible legal gun owner, I am personally 100 percent behind gun owners needing to carry insurance on all firearms.
$10 per $100 in value, certainly wouldn't break my bank...

So, if you have a modest collection, say 10 guns worth $10,000, you are okay with paying $1,000 per year to insure them, even though the odds of them being stolen from a law abiding citizen is next to zero and if you don’t pay for the insurance, having someone from the government confiscate your guns until you can prove they are insured?

Why not raise the fines on "gun crimes" to something that would completely bankrupt most people?  Have additional overly harsh penalties when a gun is aiding any crime.  Have it pretty well understood that anyone that wants to own a gun will have to act responsibly with it?  If you do, why should there be an additional fee?  Have it very well known, if you use in a crime, you are going to lose everything.

The United States Constitution 1791. All Rights Reserved. What part of Shall not be infringed do you not understand.? The second Amendment is in place in case they ignore the others.  Enforce the gun control laws we have don't make more. Guns only have two enemies: Rust and Politicians.

Many of the over 20,000 gun control laws contain just what you suggest and more, including extended jail time and mandatory jail time.

The problems are either DA’s plead down from those penalties (quicker conviction that doesn’t clog up the court system) or the perp, who is intent on committing a bigger crime, doesn’t care — what are fines if you can’t pay them (can’t garner the paycheck of a drug dealer or gang member) or extra jail time if you are going up for life (which ensures you can’t pay fines) if convicted anyway.

Maybe these should be Federal Laws that indicate this, where a county DA has no jurisdiction?  A criminal spends their time in a State prison for whatever their crime is, then shipped to Federal Penitentiary to serve out the mandatory gun related sentences?

If you can force it to only those intent on committing bigger crimes or already looking at life sentences, that carry guns to commit crimes, resources could then be more focused on stopping them.

If the Feds, for example ATF enforced the gun laws already on the books ( NICS) there would be very little gun related crime.
