Injured steelhead
I caught this steelhead this week on elk and was very unimpressed with the fight. Once I got the hook out and checked him out I realized why... half his tail was missing. Any thoughts on what could have done this? It looks fresh and i caught him in Sterrettana so I doubt it was a boat prop injury.

I've posted this in the past ...this was caught by my friend on Elk creek 1993 ....the fish was released and I caught the same fish weeks later about a mile upstream ....have no idea what injured it ...maybe a boat prop best guess. I doubt it lived very long after I released it but it swam away .

Other aggressive fish, another fisherperson, it could have did it swimming on the rocks, ice, virus, etc. Captain Hook that could have been done by a black bear. Haha maybe someone’s dog got it.

I live in south eastern PA and I have seen Fisher in my area in the past few years. The game commission has a program to bring them back. I was wondering if one of those or a mink could have went after one. A mink I think might be too small to try for a steelie but Fisher can get to 50 pounds. I don't know if they are as much of an aquatic hunter as a mink though.

This is exactly why you should never use the machete release method.

Fish commission has been chopping their tails off for years to keep them from getting past the falls on walnut.

Ive caught trout with holes completely through them from herons and egrets. Its amazing what a fish can live through. Ive also caught flounder with huge sections of the body missing from healed shark bites. But if you handle them wrong on the release they die...

Fish was probably injured at the mouth of Elk while it was staging to go up stream. As was implied earlier you don't see many boats on the Elk.

I don't know where you read that a Fisher can get to be 50#. I was curious so I looked it up on Wikipedia. "Male and female fishers look similar. Adult males are 90 to 120 cm (35–47 in) long and weigh 3.5 to 6.0 kilograms (8–13 lb)" You're guess of 50# is about 37# above the high limit for a fisher. A 50# fisher would be as big as a wolverine.
Flyfisher for fifty-four years.
