PA Fish & Boat Commission dredging Walnut Creek Project Waters
To improve the steelhead fishing this fall, today the PA Fish & Boat Commission cleaned out the sediment that has built up in the area around the "project waters" near the mouth of Walnut Creek. They were cleaning the area from below the stop sign, up to the second pool, where the second log deflector used to be. It should improve the holding water in that section of the stream, which had been much better until the last few years, when the deeper areas had filled in.

Think this is gonna address the issue of not many fish getting up to/past rt 5? Or will it just concentrate more fish into the conga line area? When I started back in 2003 up until maybe like 2007ish I pretty much only fished south of rt 5. Too many years walking that entire stretch to see maybe 1 or 2 fish.

Until they make the "waterfall"passable again the fish will not be getting above it in any great numbers.

i doubt it, though it would be nice to roam south on walnut again. some beautiful water upstream that as far as i know remains open for fishing, although like you, it's been several years since i've ventured up that way. once a year or every other year, i'll still stop at the gun club and fish for 20 minutes under the rt. 20 bridge just to see, but it's been a long time since i've caught a steelhead there. think it's an issue at the waterfall above the chutes that seems to have begun, according to my recollection, in 2009 when there was major flash flooding during a summer storm that dumped an insane amount of rain in a very short time. it's been a few years since i've talked to anyone about it, but that seems to have been the thing that changed something about the falls there that has made it tough for steelhead to get over them. there seemed to have been some talk a few years ago, maybe more, about the pfbc exploring some options there at the falls, but not sure if that's been put on hold or nixed altogether or will be somewhere in the future.

Yeah, that's a shame. I wasn't really fluent in the names of those structures down that way to know what exactly they're opening up. They've got the equipment right there. Wish they'd knock down those falls a bit. Fishing north of rt 5, other than the lake shore, is really not for me.

Gentlemen,, How about this idea. Make the chutes a no casting/no fishing area for about 100 feet below the falls, and 50 feet above the falls. and put a WPO there to keep people from fishing or casting into the area? I have actually seen people (I refuse to call them anglers) kicking fish down from the top of the falls. It also amazes me that good suggestions, Like these, have been posted for YEARS and there has been no response from the Fish Commission stating WHY it can't be done?

I would guess that the upstream land owners ($$$)prefer it this way. It sure has kept at least one angler from trudging through their scenery the past decade or so.

I know other fish swim up elk do other fish swim up Walnut. Or is it just invasive trout. Just curious.

i've caught smallmouth and suckers in the manchester hole and in the chutes in the spring and early summer. i would imagine there are more of other species on elk - channel cats, pickerel, sheepshead - because of it's size relative to walnut.

How about this Idea . Lets let the fish commission run the program and keep special intrest out of it. Years ago that was how it was and there were fish in the creeks where everybody fished . Not spread out every where. The fish will spread them selves out. So lets just Quit whineing and FISH.!!!!!

Dredging Elk would provide another lake access to the Westside. As it stands you have Walnut and thats about it. Can't use V's Beach launch unless you are camping there. No one in their right mind wants to go outta Elk with it being inches deep. Its bad enough on a flat day. If it kicks up at all and you gotta run for cover, you could easily flip a boat there trying to get in. Put a couple crude breaker walls in there and dig that sumanaditch out. Maybe even fortify that horrible "dock and ramp".
Just my opinion. Of course Elk can't accommodate Charter Boats and Walleye Warriors with their 22+ftrs, so why would they put any money into it... jus ask'IN jus say'IN..

If they made it more accessible for boats, there would be shots fired during still head season between boaters and steak headers. I would imagine that is part of their thought process? I think they would be better off making a launch like Virginia Beach that isn’t part of a creek.

Thats a good idea there Pork, only problem is your talking some major ching for a project like that. First you have to purchase the land. Then its planning, excavation, paving.. yadda yadda yadda. We can't get them to spend minimal funds to tow a backhoe down behind ECS and run it a few days. Nice try tho T, I like the thinking

are the falls the impediment, or the numbers crash of the late '00s? Never much one to fish Walnut all that much. But haven't seen the ManHole black with thousands of steel since the early '00s seems if the falls was the stop, whatever comes into Nut these days would be stacked like cord wood. How many fish get stocked in Nut these days? and what's the bio-guys fish counters figure on smolt return rate..10% ? ..L.T.A.
