Fresh skein and sacks

Can anyone give advice what is the best way to keep fresh skein and fresh egg sacks "fresh".  How long will they keep in fridge and can they be frozen.  I did vacuum seal I piece of skein but wanted to see if there was any other way or ask the pro's.  Thanks in advance.

It depends on what state the eggs are in.  If they are still in skeins then they freeze less well in my experience.  I rarely fish skein though.    If the female fish is gravid and the eggs are loose then just put them in plastic containers and freeze fresh.  They literally last years and when you want to use them, defrost, tie your sacks with fresh, loose eggs, and you're set.

I've started "curing" skein the last few years, and it works reasonably well.

If you get a fresh hen with eggs still in the skeins, cut them into the size pieces you want to use and then let 'em sit for a few hours on a good layer of newspaper or paper towels till they feel a little tacky.  Put however many pieces you'd use in one trip in a ziplock bag, cover with Borax and shake it up, making sure to coat all surfaces.

Repeat the shaking every hour for a couple of hours, and then put 'em in the freezer.

I'm too lazy to tie them into sacks, but if you prefer them in some mesh, you can certainly do that.  If they're not tied up, you can also rip them apart to vary the size of your offering.  Not gonna be able to fling 'em real far that way, but if you cast carefully, a hunk will stay on a size 16 hook (what I use just about all the time) for a pretty reasonable length of time.

Give 'em a few hours to thaw out slowly before you want to use 'em.

I used to cure skein with borax. I would cut off a chunk for the hook and the borax would "milk" in the water. I usually did pretty well on the coho that way.

Thanks so much guys.  Now, my only problem is with rsquared response.  Just trying to figure out how many I'd use in 1 trip.... Sometimes they just absolutely love skein and other times like anything else, not as much.   I guess I'll always try to go over-prepared!!

The last time that I used skank, I used some egg loop rigs that someone linked on here. Basically a slip knot on the back of your hook that traps the skank in, rather than hook into it. They worked really well at keeping it on and actually caught one with too.

I did the borax thing too and saved some in the freezer for a year and still worked.
