Jig head recommendations
5 times in my last two outings with my 9 year old son, we’ve had some big fish completely straighten the hooks on the jig heads we’ve been using. They are the cheap Eagle Claw ones from Wal Mart. 1/8 oz. Fine for panfish, but need something sturdier.
3” Gulp minnows have been getting pounded because the water is full of baby shad. Have tried 1/4 oz salt water jig heads with bigger soft plastics, but those are like a 1/0 hook and too big for the Gulp which they’re really keyed in on so I’m looking for a jig head with like a size 6 or 4 hook that in 1/8 oz that’ll stand up some big, tough fish.

rsquared, I would try setting the drag looser,I have caught some very big fish with small light hooks that way. Or maybe you could take me where these big fish are so that I could observe. lol sam

I buy my jigheads at Poffs in espyville. I believe they are northland jigs. Always been very happy with them

mr. crappie I had the drag set pretty loosely. Not super loose since using 20# braid but enough that I could easily hand pull line off. One fish yesterday I had a hook set and a big turn and run for like 2 seconds and that was enough to straighten the hook. And I’d be glad to take you along anytime.
Btdt those Gamatsku jigs look like they might work. The other ones are 2/0 hooks like I’ve already got. Too big for a 3” Gulp.
Crappieslayer, I’ll have to check those out.

Dave, Gamakatsu makes jigs in all sizes but I wasn't sure if ****#39;s ❓ (he hee Richards) carried a varity. I will say, if you striaghten Gamakatsu hooks, it's time to get out the harpoon. 🤓

Hands down the best jig head I've ever used is from a company called VooDoo Custom Tackle. They are pricey, but the hook is 3x strong. Ive never seen or even heard of one that failed. They are made with salmon/steelhead in mind.

Nickel / Cad jig hooks are the strongest ....if you can find them...not cheap ...won't bend on big fish. I believe mini - foo jigs used them at least years ago.

Keep your eyes open in the stores up there, was in the bait store right in front Presque isle state park looks like he had some with thicker hooks and no brand name on them. None was painted that I saw. But I got a couple for the bigger fish. They work great.

Dave, You should talk to my son. He makes over a ton a yr. Lots custom to order, think he is on drop shots mostly now. Send me some photos ov what u r looking for if you want, footballs or whatever. Just came from upstairs at camp & he has sooo many molds & over a million hooks here plus over a million at home from large stainless shark--- fly hooks. Well over a 100 custom molds also. He has no clue what he has but just keeps on buying. Has a ton ov powder paint or very close to that in boxes just taking up room if you ask me. crappy Just remembered he has 50 lb boxes ov jigs already made & painted. Lots ov Bucktails , some have rattles & moving eyes others are huge salt water stuff too ice jigs, noticed some full 5 gal. buckets ov gold/copper hooks that I didn't see before. They (hooks & jigs) that are here are from a lure company he bought out from Florida, nice quality stuff. I'll check around up here this week & see what I come up with. Some crazy lookin' stuff. This is out of control!! Just came from cellar looking for 5 gals. of paint. Thought I found 5 buckets hidden under stairs, Nope all full of brass spoons like Johnson's, couldn't budge 'em!!! I GIVE UP!! Sorry 'bout the rant but I'm gonna need therapy soon. Or maybe I could make wind chimes with 'em  No wonder I can't sleep.

Does he have an Ebay site to move things?
Seems to be the only place to find the collarless jig heads. I use mine mostly for pan fish. They did just fine the last time steel heading when I loosened the drag. I like the ones that will bend straight when snagged (with braid). Check to see if the point is messed up, if not, bend back in place and back to fishing.

Tim, He sells all over the USA & Canada. don't think he likes Ebay much though. Texans love his stuff. But he has so much stuff jigs, lures, rods, Mustad, Eagle Claw & Gamakatsu over 2 million total, file cabinets full ov lure making supplies, 14 boats, soft plastics by the garbage cans, floats, over 2 doz. Mercury props & so on. He should concentrate on moving some ov that stuff & wouldn't have to worry 'bout making custom jigs & weights for customers for a long long time.

Got three colors of the Vodoo heads in the mail today. Didn’t get to fish with them yet, but they look and feel pretty stout. Thanks for the recommendation. I like supporting the little guys when I can.
