Bradford PA trout fishing

I know this fits more in the Northcentral forum, but since nobody is on there, figured I'd throw this up here.

We'll be in Bradford this weekend for a baseball tournament, and will have lots of free time.  My 15 year old son is a certified trout bum when he's not playing baseball and we'd like to do some fishing within about 30-45 minutes of downtown Bradford.

We're definitely gonna spend some time at the outflow at Kinzua if it ain't ripping too hard.  Read a little bit about the branch of the Tunungwant that flows through Bradford.

I'm totally unfamiliar with that area, so any general suggestions on bodies of water that might be worth checking out this time of year would be appreciated.

There are a lot of streams up there. My favorite is Kinzua creek around Westline to the mouth into the lake. There is also a keystone select dhalo section on the stream right above the section I mention.

I'll second kinzua creek. Used to spend a lot of time camping up along there on FR321. Caught a lot of fish in that area, and some beautiful scenery to go with it. There is also any number of smaller streams around you can catch little brookies in if that's your thing. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies fellas!

He'd be pretty happy finding some brook trout with his 3 wt I'm sure, so we've been looking at some of the blue lines on the maps in the ANF up that way and trying to pick a few.

Thanks John! Looking forward to it - I've never been in that area before.  Although I realized yesterday that if we do some blue lining, we'll need to be on the lookout for rattlers and copper heads!

Happy 4 to yinz as well!  Hope the paint is dry, stuff is organized and the FishHawk is on the water soon!

Good luck up there and share a few pics with us when you get back. Those brookies are some pretty fish.

Thanks CS.  Been a couple years since we went blue lining for brookies, but we've done it a few times in the Laurel Highlands, and they sure are beautiful!  Hopefully we can find a few hungry ones.

Welp my son was a bit busier with baseball than I thought, so I gave blue lines a look see but didn't catch any of the gems within.  Did a lot more driving and walking than I did fishing, but it was good to explore up there a little bit.

Anyone ever fish the trophy trout section of East Branch Tunungwant Creek up there?  Granted, on those kinds of streams, I'm out of my element, but I did a good bit of walking on a few sections - both the trophy trout section and the class A wild trout section and didn't see a whole lotta water conducive to such a designation.  Maybe them troots are better at hiding in shallow water than I am at lookin' for 'em.

Stopped by the Kinzua tailrace on my way back to Butler County and wet a line for about 20 minutes.  Beautiful looking water there.  Wish we had a few days to fish it hard sometime.

I had to leave Bradford on Saturday afternoon, but baseball continued on Sunday morning.  So on the way back from Bradford yesterday, the big boy talked his momma into some ANF adventure time.  He had done quite a bit of online homework, and decided on the one blue line he wanted to check out.  The road that he thought would take them right to it, ended about 1/2 mile from the crick but he and my wife hiked in and he found some gems:

Thanks for sharing! Some beautiful country to explore up there, and if you can hook a few of them pretty brookies all the better. They may not be very big, but them little chits sure can be spooky and hard to catch. Congrats to your son for getting a few. Makes me want to head up that way since I haven't been up for a year or two.

That is super cool! Congrats to the young man.

It has been far too long since I did that.

Glad yinz enjoyed the pics!  He loves doing that kind of stuff.  When it comes to fishing, he is definitely much, much more about quality than he is about quantity.

Beautiful country up that way, although downtown Bradford sure is in a rough spot.  Sad to see another small city in PA fall on hard times as the industries that once supported it dry up.  He had one game at St Bonaventure in Olean, NY too, and just over the NY line on Rt. 219, I do believe I saw my first ever bear crossing sign.  Although it looked a lot more like a big black pig than a bear.

Nothing in the above about fishing.
