near disaster in ohio erie

Just watched the news in a story of approx. 50 ice fishermen being rescued in Sandusky ( I believe ) on Lake Erie. Lucky that there were no fatalities. pretty hectic with the coast guard & other first responders doing a great job of rescue.   sam

Seems like this is a semi-regular occurrence.  I recall this happening a couple years ago too.
Didn't see anything on it but I assume the ice sheet they were fishing on broke loose and started drifting out into the lake?

Guess they should have anchored the ice sheet with some tax rocks...live and learn...

I understand the Coast Guard don't bring back nothing but the person. All equipment stays with the ice.

    That is probably the case.

Many years ago a guy in our bass club swamped his boat on Erie. After the CC pulled he and his partner off, they cut the boat loose.

I had a friend who was on one of the drift away slabs out that way 7 or 8 years ago. They didn't even know until the CG showed up,the berg they were on was about 2 mile wide and 8 miles long. Funny thing was it only drifted a couple of hundred yards from good ice. They had to hire some air boat capts.  to retrieve their stuff.  The next day the wind pushed the berg back to shore.
