Sugar Lake 2018

Has anyone been fishing this lake this year?  How is it?

    Being somewhat of history buff, I find Sugar Lake to be of interest as it is a natural glacial lake being quite deep for all the more area that it covers (90 acres +/-).  Once upon a time the lake was well noted for it's bass and musky and I see you list the Esox as a favorite.  Last I I fished it, access to Sugar Lake is limited to one launch sight maintained by the PFBC with very limited parking and much of the shoreline is landlocked by private land.  I mention the shore line because I see you fish mostly streams but don't know if only by wading, yak, canoe, etc.
     
    Even more interesting, being somewhat of history buff mind you, is your user name.  Are you an avid gamer?

    I also have an interest in history and geology.  I'll PM you about the user name.  I was up in the general vicinity of Sugar Lake this weekend and we caught a few pickerel.  The checklist of Esox is slowly being checked off - now if I could just tie into one of those elusive muskie.  We didn't bother hitting the lake because we didnt have a boat or our 'yaks with us, but I'm hoping to get on that water very soon.  Is the water in that lake generally clear or murky?  I'm a big fan of spinners and spoons and they always seem to work better for me in clear water with bright sun.  I guess I'm just trying to work up some intel before I hit that lake.

    I'm willing to bet, with all the rain we've had, the water is murky right about now. However, the lake is in the French Creek water shed so rain in my neck of Penn's Woods may not necessarily affect Sugar Lake.  The lake is stream fed and the outlet, at one time, was a paradise for a bow angler.  More about the water quality can be found on the PFBC biologist report web sight regarding the lake.
     
    Check the regs on this lake as HP was limited to 6HP but 10 was being considered.  Also the lake is a Big Bass lake and I've not heard if the special Musky regs were changed.
     
    The lake is a natural glacial lake being an average of 18 feet deep with deeper pockets.
     
    Good times and tight lines if you do get on Sugar Lake.

    Does anyone know of any bait stores anywhere near that area?  The best I could find last weekend was the place in Cooperstown and it was sold out of shiners then.  I just wonder in I'm missing any places in the Franklin-Oil City-Cochranton area.

    For live bait only mind you, all my lures/rigs have come from FishUSA the past couple years which reminds me I just rigged a new StCroix BassX and have not wet a line with it...... bye

    I fished it this weekend.  Pickerel and perch seemed to strike well, but the LMB and crappie bite was slow.  More fry and baitfish than I've ever seen. Nice lake...I had a 1/2 lb burger at the lakeside hotel and it was pretty good.  A bit too hot to fish, but still a decent day.  Lots of pleasure boaters in the afternoon.
