2 weeks

Hard to believe that in 2 weeks we can begin to sit stands in the SRA. Did some camera checks and there seems to be some doe around. A few small bucks. Nothing big around my stands but I don't expect good bucks to start showing until the end of October in my spots.

If half of the bucks I saw last year in my SRA areas made it through, there should be some real good ones creeping around come November.

    Where did the summer go?

Gonna do some shooting today and crawl into the stand I plan to sit on the opener to make sure my shooting lanes still look good from when I trimmed them in March.

Got the 1st buck out of velvet on camera last week and one nice buck showing up daily. Hope he sticks around a couple more weeks.

Trimmed some stands. Man, the invasive honeysuckle is hard to stay ahead of. I may be crowded out of this spot in a few years.

Did have one nice 8 point on the camera still in velvet that seems to be a regular. With the EHD outbreak getting really bad down here, all bets are off when this fall. My best farm in 2A  sits in the cross hairs so I may be hunting the SRA more often this fall.

Very early rut where I hunt was a bit further verified yesterday- Saw a  small doe (1.5) and a small fawn already out of spots.
Generally fawns from the year before drop a bit later as they mature and breed a bit later as their first season goes on. IMHO.
Was seeing bucks chasing and many ground scrapes well before other folks reporting same last year.
Heck- they were marking and chasing in early Sept. and no new scrapes after the beginning of Oct down there.
By normal rut time they were done in my place- lots of doe around too.
    Cwazy deers.
The season before they marked and chased well into the gun season.

Well there is no fool like an old fool---
Today is day one of our  CT Archery Deer and Turkey season.
Did all my scouting -built a nice blind- refreshed the blind yesterday.
Bought all my tags last March looking forward to some fishing and spring turkey--
On the 45 mile trip to the promised land this AM started to wonder if I had gone back to City Hall and purchased my fall hunting tags.
    Hmmmm
Pulled into a highway rest area and NOPE just the fishing and Spring stuff.
No Archery Deer or firearm Deer tags.
Now just sitting here feeling like a pile of bovine field splatter  typing on this dopy machine when I should be sitting in my blind.
Oh well- City Hall will open and an afternoon hunt will follow----

r3 put this story in the hunting archives. It'll be a good one for some ha Haas down the road.

Good luck on that afternoon hunt.

Good that you checked before getting in the woods and whacking a deer. If you have my kind of luck, it would be the only time a warden shows up and offers a hand. lol

May as well stock up on bug repellant if not already done so. Weather dude saying we North Easter's can expect August in September starting next week. Sunny and 80ish.

Sat for three hours this morning in 2B. Thought it was going to come together when 3 does were feeding my way. Mama skirted me in the thick stuff so that ended that. I can't make it out tonight so next week gonna hit it again.

Been bow hunting over 50 years now- wont climb trees anymore and still using my "new" Hoyt mystic compound with 30 inch aluminum arrows and 125 thunderheads.
Likely considered an antique by many but have taken lots of deer, turkey and a bear with it. Don't ever see a change coming at this point. ( ANTIQUE MEANING BOTH MYSELF AND THE EQUIPMENT)
Have the attitude now, after more than my share of good luck over time, that if it happens, it happens and if it don't, it don't.
One of those new fangled crossbows would likely have put meat on the table yesterday afternoon but am just as happy ( I think) to have passed.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OUT THERE AND HOPE YOU LEAVE THE SEASON WITH GREAT MEMORIES.
REMEMBER, IT AINT THE WEIGHT OF MEAT ON THE TABLE BUT THE NUMBER OF NICE MEMORIES THAT COUNT MOST.

It was 83 here yesterday, but I could not resist spending some time in one of my stands last evening -- with a salted rim frozen margarita.

Oh, it is a bench in a grove of hickory trees half way between my house and our patch of woods. Saw 11 antlerless.

This will be my first archery season and I can't imagine hunting if it is this warm.

Good luck this fall! Temps are forecast to be in the eighties for the next 10 days here. I plan on hunting tomorrow after work near Pittsburgh. But the thought of sitting there in 82 degrees isn't sounding too appealing. Especially if a shot is taken.

What is odd about ticks in my area this year is that they were abundant in the warmth of January and February, but after the little cold snap at the end of February and the beginning of March, I've seen nary a one on myself or the dogs (although they still get treated once per month). It's like they got decimated when it got cold and they never recovered -- not that I'm complaining.

    Hunt #2
    ( another memorable day)
Got in my spot at o dark 30 and waited in a stiff wind.
Hurricane remnants off the coast and I'm about on the Ct/ RI border along the coast line.
Very overcast and tree tops whipping.
    Nothing moving.
Looked down at my bow about 10 am for some reason ( boredom) and noticed the string clean cut about halfway through.
Musta touched it with an arrowhead.
    OOOPs -off to the shop.
Gotta order a new one in my antique size.
    - that's that for a while.

Can't eat the horns, but its been extremely hot this week and I can say I don't know if I'd want to shoot one in this heat. Reguardless, hope you have another chance at a nice buck. One more week and ill be out joining the fun. Looks like the temps are supposed to cool down some. Looking forward to it 👍👍

Tough call, two of my son's friends tag out from the same tree while filming the hunt on Monday, big 9 and a high decent 7. It's hot and there's plenty of sick dying deer in my area. I've passed before and ended up eating crow. Perfect scenario hunt all of archery season and stick  a big one on the last day. lol I've killed a several in the first couple days of archery season,in their bachelor group and it was fun but sure missed not hunting the rut.
