first one in a while

Havent had much luck in the past few seasons since a decline in numbers on the area I hunt.
They simply haven been there.
This year made 2 trips there without a gobble or sighting until this AM.
Called a gobbling Tom in from about 400 yards at daylight.
Came quick---BOOM.

My new place  (only 21 ac.) has a nice Fall roost but nothing as yet this season.
Who knows -perhaps this week is the lucky one there too.

At least the rains have stopped-for the most part-lol.

Awesome. Nothing like calling one in from a ways off and killing em. Congrats!

Around here there is not a morning hike that I don't hear or see birds, mainly I believe it's because the gas people are in the woods cutting right a ways for their pipeline. That is causing both turkeys and deer to change their habits. I'm located in the heart of the industry so much I leave for appointments 30-40 minutes earlier then usual because you have no idea how many flaggers you'll run into.

Seems to have been a good year for chicks- seeing hens with numbers of young regularly.
Havent seen so many in a few seasons--GOOD.

Saw a longbeard all fanned out walking tight circles around a hen lying in a field yesterday.
Drove past slowly but kinda know what it looked like was gonna happen- early for that---
Have seen them fanning for a while but not actually working hens.

    Well- back to normal  lol
3 weeks into the season and a number of dawns in the woods- not ONE SINGLE GOBBLE
Location location - my neighbor is working birds daily.
The farm I hunt is NOT having a good bird year-------haven't even seen a hen.
Place was loaded with turkey in the fall.
Kinda think its the heavy daily tractor activity in the fields with not too much woods to hunt.
Orrr -as has happened before there- a neighbor is on a turkey feeding frenzy.

After many trips afield this year without a gobble- then the tornado and cleanup afterwards along with rain rain rain for days- then falling and spraining my right hand, having to wear a wrap for days--
    TODAY IT HAPPENED---
Got to my spot at 5 and he sounded off on the roost 400 yds away at 505.
Soft purrs and some clucks got him hot and he was nuts on the roost for half an hour.
He flew about 250 yds across the fields to the strip of swamp and small brook I was on the far side of.
I sit by the tractor road crossing the mess and have taken over a dozen Toms coming in on that crossing over the years as well as some Fall hens.
    All over shortly after 6.
I am crazy about working a bird in off of the roost-best thing in the Outdoors --IMHO.
Nice mature Tom with a 10 inch beard.
Could take more but  One and Done is all I need.
More than satisfied in what I had thought was a bust season.

    Congrats.
Was going to visit my brother at his camp site 3:30 in the afternoon and there they were 2 big gobblers in a field.   Looked like they were on top of hens.  Yes, they were on heavily posted land which no one is permitted to hunt on.  This was last Sunday  but my uncle saw them Saturday in the same field.   I guess they knew they were safe.
