Trout fishing, the rivers
Fished the allegheny river for years and years now and still haven't caught a trout out of it. I never really tried but you would think with all the stocking that they do, that there would be a bunch of trout in our rivers. Heck I even seen them stocking the rivers. Where do all those trout go. I know a lot are caught but for the ones that do get washed down what happens to them. Maybe snack for the bigger predators. Anyone have any luck and catch trout out of our rivers.

Caught a few most every yr. in the 70's - - 80's Plum Oakmont area. Nice healthy fish. Sure the big Eyes & Musky have a feast.

Depends on what part of the Allegheny you're talking about. But yea, stockers from tributaries probably mostly get eaten by walleyes & musky & flatheads. Way far upriver, there are a lot of trout in the river, but fishing from shore, randomly, you're not going to catch many if any. It's a big river, access isn't easy. That said there are some good shore/wade spots, but no way I'm giving them up on this site. From a boat, specifically targeting them, you'll catch some but not around Pittsburgh very often.

Heck I've drifted in a canoe for miles in the allegheny and nothing still. Don't even see them swimming around.

They are in there, scattered , not big numbers. I hear closest to the Kinzua Dam is the best area to target big Browns. The mouths of all Trout streams entering the Allegheny are good target areas.

Not really trying to get one haha. Just making small talk. Actually that is the only trout I've seen pulled out of the river was by the kinzua dam. They do stock a crap load at the boat launch up there. Just would think that all those times drifting a worm you would at least get a couple. Heck you would even think they would do something like the steelhead. Maybe swim out in the river during summer and come back to the creeks bigger. Just was curious and thought it was strange.

I can remember catching 3 in the Allegheny river,all in mid June fishing for small mouths. 2 Brown's on a little 2"rebel crayfish crank bait,and a bow on a rooster tail. None where big about 12-13 ". I caught a brownie in the Beaver river at the mouth of a small trout stream about 14" on a small creek chub.

A friend of mine caught a Brook Trout about 12" in Shenango Lake while we were fishing one Summer. I'm sure it washed down from Greenville's Little Shenango Creek ,but that's at least 12 miles away.

I have caught a fair amount of trout in the Allegheny river. Caught 6 or so through the years around lock 4. One day fishing near lock 7 I caught 11 brook trout in 30 minutes. I was putting them back so maybe some were duplicates ? No big ones, 11 to 13 inches or so.

I've caught a few trout in the lower Shenango over the years, especially in a dry, warm spring when the smaller creeks aren't as hospitable.

Don't forget about about the clarion. The head waters and it's tribs are heavily stocked and a lot of its tribs are full of wild bow, browns and native brookies. I have caught several 18+ in the west branch.

I remember back in the late the 70's the trout would be in the rocks about 8' off the shore line around Tionesta. Got a couple out of the Shenango as well. I would assume the predators are cleaning them up pretty good.
