Speaking of the OAK

Hi all it's been awhile since i have been on. Life got a little busy. i have fished erie tribs for steel and salmon river for salmon. I am seriously considering making a trip to knock off a big brown. When would be my best time to head for the oak to give it a shot? also looking for what to use. my old steel rig OK or better with salmon outfit. dont wanna be overkill but want to land a big one too.
