Inline Boards HELP

 The season for this is all but gone and will be starting the day runs BUT - I picked up the church co. walleye boards to try some night eye catch. I need some advice ... pulling shallow divers, F11 raps, in brown trout, purple descent and a few bay rats in various colors all 4-6 ft range staying in 10 to 13 foot between walnut and trout run. I am using okuma combos (however I think my issue is in here), the med duty 8 foot 6 for pulling dipsy divers, but only rods I have for now. I am running the plugs back about 100 ft from board, then I have been trying to put the board out between 70 and 100 feet and keeping around 1.7 to 1.9 mph, with an inboard and trolling plate. the issue is the boards seem to get every waves undertow then pop forward every time it hits a wave, I have moved the weight forward but really no different considering I only pulling shallow dive plug. Is this normal or is the rod to stiff for this allowing it to pull under every wave and the rod pulls it up with less current? Its annoying and has to be affecting the way my plugs run. Maybe its normal? I have tried rods straight up and out about 90 degrees. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance ..........

    Perchmaster I am new to planer boards, although I don't fish the 'big water',  and I just bought the same rods and eager to run similar set-ups.  
     
    Running the boards using 7 ft heavy rods I too experienced the "hurky jerky" motion of the boards.  Usually falling behind the boat then running quickly forward as if to catch up only to drop back again.  
     
    I was certain, buying 8'6" "Dipsy Diver" rods by Okuma would help running planers and then (before I could use mine) I see your question.    Uh-Ohhhhh, I'm thinking, I sure hope there is someone out there that can help us both.
     
    I've watched ("til blue in the face") and as of yet have not found 'tutorials' that show how to "set-up" planer boards.
     
    Also, the "trolling plate" does that work as expected, I've been thinking of a similar set-up for my 20 horse kicker.  Just cannot get that motor to run slower than 2 MPH most of the time.
     
    But I will say this, going backwards (back trolling) while pulling side planers does keep the masses at bay. lol

    100% for the plate, its a davis happy troller. I had to get the large for inboard, I was trolling last year pulling buckets off sides and couldn't keep below 2.8 to 3.1 at low rpms and it was making engine run really rough. The plate can get me down to 1.5 if I wanted and at higher rpms so the motor is liking it (Shes old 1976 GM 250 165hp). Out pulling the large dipsy I run 2.1 to 2.3 and have no issues either, probably best investment I made. FishUSA does not carry these, I bought mine from Anchor Express online for 89.99 plus 10 bucks shipping it was here in 3 day

    I use trolling bags. One on each side of the boat at about the center. Some people use 5 gallon buckets. I've found the double trolling bags the best. I tried a trolling plate but wasn't real happy with it. There are a lot of articles and videos out there that show the two bag set up. I found rigging them together by running the rope under my boat. If I can find the articles or videos I'll post the url. Google it.

    Perchmaster thank you for the info on the trolling plate. Knocking that 250 down to 1.5 MPH and keeping the RPMS high enough allowing for a smooth running engine sounds ideal.

    Patroller thank you also, I tried the link but got a blank page using my phone. I will certainly research the trolling bags along with the plate when I can fire up my 'puter.

    That is, if the 'puter still works after updating to WINDOWS 10.
