With 7 colors of lead and 200 more feet of leader and backer it just takes forever to bring in fish with the lower gear ratio. We use magdapro 35s or 45s with 30lb braid for our dipsy rods. We just have been able to accumulate enough gear we have dedicated lead core lines. The Penns would pull in a dipsy without problem if needed.

Is 4.9:1 considered a low gear ratio? The cabela's reels I use for downrigger setups are 4.0:1 and a lot of the other trolling reels I've seen are around that. Heck, I've see a couple Penn models that were 1.2:1 !

I run 8 okuma rod combos from poor richards on my boat for lakers, steelhead, and walleye.I run 30# braid on my dypsy rods and 10# mono on my boards and have never lost a fish to broken lines or a rod or reel problem. 2 solid years of service I estimate over 100 days of use. Over 600 eye's and 50 or more salmonids and several large cats.At $60 a combo very resonable and completely replaceable if something happens to them.

What model reels are those? 10 pound mono, for inline boards? I guess I'm just paranoid, I'm planning on downgrading to 20# mono on my downrigger rods this year from the 25# I was using last year and that alone seems to low to me. At the same time, we just started trolling last year and my biggest fish was 16 pounds so it's not like it comes that close to the force needed to break 20# line. That 30 pound Lake Trout I'll be searching for in the spring might though :).

Also, what are you catching the cats on? I saw your picture from last year of that one off of one of the Tribs but I didn't see the lure. I caught a 21 pound one from shore last May on a 3/4 ounce daredevle so I'm starting to think lures are a good way to filter through the smaller fish! It'd be nice if we can develop a method of reliably catching these guys through slow trolling (maybe crawler harnesses trolled like 0.5mph ?) but I'm not sure if that'll catch many fish. I know I've found a few good speeds and lures for targeting Drum at least!

the reels are the magdas and that big cat was caught on a 500 series reef runnerin orange and black. I have caught them running near shore with shad raps, reefs, and bayrats.

I guess those things must love love cranks then!

I know, but I always thought of 4.5:1+ as being high speed and 1.0:1-4.4:1 as being high power, and I know you want a reel with more power for dipsies. Maybe I'm just thinking musky, since you want a high speed (I use 7.1:1) for reeling slack line from jerkbaits and a high power reel for pulling double tens.

We have many different Penns, I look for them in bait shops when down in Southern Maryland since many of the old 'workhorse' models I remember using have been discontinued. I think they are 3.2;1 ratio, would have to double check the reel.
We have some Penn line counter reels but honestly haven't been happy with the counter mechanisms. Multiple broken parts...the reel itself works fine, but the counters mostly failed within a year or two or intermittently skip.
It is nice to have matching equipment but using the set ups with the color coded braid takes care of duplicating presentations without problem. As long as rods match on each side so you can see subtle differences in rod tip positions you can do fine with differing reels.
I have to put in a plug for the magda pros and the trolling combos fishusa sells, they do just fine on Erie for average fishing uses and are hard to beat for the prices.

Good to know with the line counter, I'll probably stick to either Okumas or Shimanos for now then, maybe pick up some Penns after a while for flatline use.

Re: Rods, Reels, and Line 2016/03/25 20:49:04 (permalink)
Aside from the trolling setups which I already have purchased and spooled up, I have a question for you guys about what type of line I should use for a spinning setup. It's a 6'8" medium power jig/senko G. Loomis rod with a Shimano Sedona 2500 reel that I use for many species. Right now, I have it spooled up with straight 10 pound mono going directly to the snap swivel and then the lure. For this season, I'm debating whether to use straight 10 or 12 pound mono again or 20 pound power pro braid with a 6 foot leader of 12 pound fluoro leader. Locally, I use it for casting inline spinners, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, and topwaters for stocked Trout and Black Bass. In Erie where I use it most I'm using it for casting jerkbaits, spoons, crankbaits, and inline spinners for Drum, White Bass, Walleye, Pike, and the occasional Smallmouth as well as vertical jigging for primarily Drum, or whatever else feels like pounding a nice tube :). So what do you all think, for those applications would straight 10-12 pound mono or 20 pound braid with a six feet 12# fluoro leader be better?

I use braid with a flouro leader for the majority of my fishing. If you don't like casting the leader knot, don't hesitate to leave the leader 16-24". I also use much lighter braid for any stocked trout fishing(3-6lb test).

2nd that with the 20lb. power pro and the appropriate flouro leader for the species targeted. I use a micro swivel to tie the two together and run about 6 ft. of leader, this way I can try to keep the swivel out of the rod guides for casting.

Okay, I was just concerned that having such a shirt leader of the fish would be scared off by the braid. But I guess 20 pound PowerPro is pretty thin anyway. I'd use lighter braid if I was fishing for mainly trout but that's only a couple times of year and I mainly use a different setup for that. This rod is mostly for using in Erie for big Drum and squirrelly White Bass that fight hard and take big runs, so I just don't want to have underpowered line.

You cast with 6 feet of line out? I feel like I'd just splash the lure a foot in front of me if I tried that with a little rooster tail or something haha.

LOL, coincidentally, I wouldn't even have this nice setup if a big Drum hadn't pulled my old, cheaper setup off the side of the boat in PIB last July. Lesson learned: never leave your rods out of the holders, even for two seconds!

If the waters real clear I'll lengthen the leader, but under most conditions, I do just fine with a short leader.

Another quick question for you guys. I got my downrigger reels spooled up yesterday and unfortunately the local shop didn't have that many good big water options, being in SWPA. I spooled them both up with 20# Trilene XL mono. I know this is a casting line but can I assume it will still work as Downrigger line being ripped out of the release and pulled but big Salmonids being as thick as all 20# mono is? I'm hoping it is as tough and abrasion resistant as the 25# big game I used last year, but I guess we'll see in time. A nice Lake Trout should put it to the test :).

I would look at the Okuma great Lakes trolling combos fishusa offer. I have several of the lake trolling rigs for worm harnesses on pyemia and couldn't be happier.

I wasn't even aware PowerPro made color coded braid, thanks! Good to hear they can take the force of a diver, I assume you don't ever want to pull in a Dipsy fast though, right? Or are the Penns specifically not good for if you're really cranking a fish in fast?
