Re: SHENANGO RIVER LAKE 2015 2016/02/10 10:02:23 (permalink)

Walleye are one of the
most sought-after sport
fish in Pennsylvania.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                .
By stocking fry and fingerlings
in these waters, the Commission provides anglers with a fishery that could not exist on
its own. So the next time you’re fishing your favorite water and happen to catch a walleye or two, think about the effort that went in to providing that fish, and remember that
it was your license dollars that made it happen.

Shenango River hasn't received a Walleye since 2007 !   Nine years of nothing !

Shenango Lake received 1,800 Walleye in 2015 !   Down from 77,000 the previous year !

What a joke this program is ! It's an insult to all fishermen in this area ! A grand total of 1800 stocked Walleye on our two major waterways that are fished by hundreds if not thousands of fishermen yearly. And they wonder why license sales have been dropping off yearly. They wrote the top paragraph maybe they should read it once in awhile !

Capt,
redo your math.   Although the final number doesn't mean much because 6800 is a drop in the bucket.
I wonder if 2015 is an outlier due to sickness, lack of fry , etc.
I wouldn't think that they'd even send a truck down for that small amount of fingerlings.
Here are the #'s since 2000 for both the river and lake.

Re: SHENANGO RIVER LAKE 2015 2016/02/10 14:41:40 (permalink)
The new Inland Walleye stocking program started in 2008    ( Basically a cutback stocking program )

"Beginning in 2008, we suspended Walleye stockings in all of our flowing waters and began an intensive evaluation program to determine the levels of Walleye natural reproduction in those previously stocked rivers."
French Creek got a total of 1.4 million Walleye fry stocked just last year 2015. I have nothing against French Creek stockings but lets be somewhat fair.
Shenango River got zero ! For the past 9 years !

Shenango River has had the best catch rate and some of the nicer size Walleye caught in this area, yet that means nothing to insuring a good future in Walleye fishing. Would it hurt to put 10,000 fry in annually like they did ? The results are seen every year by hundreds of fishermen who have caught those river Walleyes. Once again why mess with something that is working fine ....I give up

Hopefully they reproduce on their own like our other rivers do (win, win) Hence no need to stock & let Mother Nature take over like our other rivers. Maybe It has good natural repoduction as is. Good they r studying it for a few yrs. & see what happens in my book.

Re: SHENANGO RIVER LAKE 2015 2016/02/10 21:07:41 (permalink)
In the year 2008 the Fish Commission started their new Inland Walleye Stocking program. Like I said before this was basically a major cut back on stocking Walleye in our waterways throughout the State . Some numbers are very drastic cuts and I think will have strong rippling effects into the future of Walleye fishing as we knew it. I hope I'm wrong , but you look at these huge cuts and tell me how Mother Nature will replenish the supply. Some of these cutbacks should have been felt the past few years, so if your not seeing the amount of Walleye being caught this is probably why.

Allegheny River / Armstrong County /  2007 last stocking  / 3 million cut each year since  / 27 million less over 9 years

Allegheny River / Tionesta area  /  2007 last stocking / 196,000 cut each year since /  1.7 million less over 9 years

Allegheny River / Oil Creek, French Creek , areas  2007 last stocking  / 3.4 million cut each year since / 30.6 million less over 9 years

Allegheny River / Clarion County  / 2007 last stocking / 750,000 cut each year since / 6.75 million less over 9 yrs.

Clarion River / Clarion County / 2012  last stocking / 211,000 cut each year since / 844,00 less over 4 yrs.

Edinboro Lake / Erie County / 2014 last stocking / 5,000 less from 2014  / no stocking 2015 / 14,000 less over 2 yrs.

Conneaut Lake / Crawford County / 2014 last stocking / 20,000 less from 2013 / no stocking 2015 / 40,000 less over 2 yrs.

Shenango Lake / Mercer County / 2014 stocked 72,000 / 2015 stocked 1,800 / 71,200 less in one year

Shenango River / Mercer County / 2007 last stocked 4,800 / 43,200 less over 9 yrs.

Lake Arthur / Butler County / 2014 stocked 96,700 / down 48,000 / shows no stocking for 2015 / 144,700 less over 2 yrs.

Lake Wilhelm / Mercer County / 2015 stocked / same no change  / 68,000

Pymatuning Reservoir / Crawford County / 2015 stocked / same no change / 4,293,000

Some areas did receive increases like Allegheny Reservoir , Allegheny outflow area / upper Allegheny River, and French Creek .

Just some basic rough math I show about 67.2 million" less " fry / fingerling Walleye stocked in the above listed lakes / rivers over the 9 years of missed or lowered stockings ! Even at a 10% survival rate we have lost out on about 6 - 7 million Walleye being caught in the future . Can Mother Nature keep that pace with natural spawning ?

The lakes need stocked. But would like to see how the rivers do for a (TEST) time with no stocking. That way they can see what happens without human interference somewhat. Then go from there. Buy your 5 yr. lice. now if don't want to pay for the increase if passed.

PFC and PGC suck. The PGC just got 14. 6 million for the oil rights on game lands but the still need money. If they get the increase on hunting license,it will almost be what I pay for a non resident license. Senior life time fishing license will be 100.00 next year not 51.00 like this year. More money, more money. For less and less fishing and hunting opportunities.
