Fishing Erie out of walnut ramp
Im wanting to fish lake erie at Erie in the next two weeks. Any suggestions on where or what to fish for. I have the boat and safety equipment. Where is a good place to stay, get bait, area to fish on the lake. I am thinking walnut ramp, maybe seven or so miles out to the first trench area. Some trolling or drop bait fishing. Any place better at this time? Any help would be great. I have never fished Erie. Have been wanting to for years. Ive been boating for 30+ years. Am very aware of the dangers. Thanks

Go to poor richards and tell them what you want to catch, they will give you the most up to date information on where to go and what to use. Fishing is spotty and changes daily right now

should get good end of the week with steady weather. I will be there Sunday. Might fish North Park with freshwater for bluegills in the boats though

How is the fishing in August? I may need to wait until August to make my first trip to Erie.

I think the perch fishing gets better as the time goes on. I'm stuck going on the perch boats but some of my best trips have been the couple of weeks before they shut down for the season.

Thanks Dave, I was wanting to go soon but may be delayed until early August. To many thing to get ready and my son is leaving town on 7/28 so I would need to make the trip before that or wait until he gets back. I have a targa V18 19 ft boat, lots of gear and am almost ready. Just need to load boat with all gear for Erie instead of stuff for WV waters. I am wanting to target Walleye and perch. Was thinking maybe the rain will let up by August. Just didn't know how the fishing up there is in August.

I am wanting to go out at Walnut creek ramp. Does anyone know of a cheaper motel close? I know bait shops are close. I have a Tracker Targa V-18 19 ft boat with 115 Optimax, Lowrance and compass I have trolling rods and divers, other rods for bait fishing or crankbaits. I have safety flares, distress flag, marine radio, first aid kit, rain gear and extra clothes. I want to do this right and be safe. Anyone have and sugesstions?

Generally the fishing in pa gets better by august, every year is different though. Some years by late august/sept its easy limits of perch and walleye. Some years its spotty. This june was a curve ball for sure. The weather pattern this summer is just screwy so all bets are off. Its all about the lake setting up, a good thermocline gives the walleye their "happy place" where they hang out and then you just target that depth. Right now plankton is everywhere, bait is everywhere, and the fish are everywhere. Not really a big school yet. Since you are new to Erie I would recommend maybe booking a charter to learn the ropes quick. It will give you a great starting point.

Another quick tip since you are concerned about safety. Don't ever trust a NOAA wave forecast. Myself and most everyone I know goes off of wind direction and speed. Here is a great link, they not only show wind speed but what it will gust to and what direction during which hours. I find this 10X more accurate than a "2' or less all day" forecast. http://www.windfinder.com/forecast/erie_yacht_club Anything over 10mph will get a little bumpy, gusting to 15 will give you some chop. If the wind is going to blow say 20 or 25 later in the day keep an eye out because it could always happen sooner. Any wind out of the North sucks, a South wind is best. During a south wind it will be rougher the further out you go and calmer near shore.

Angler2058 Lowrance and compass. Anyone have and sugesstions?
If you have a single unit depth finder and compass I would suggest a decent old style compass so that is case all electronics fail you could still head south to shore in fog or weather with low visability.
