Oaks Browns

Folks after talking with some other members on the SR board have decided to try a trip to The Oak. Being my maiden voyage I was wondering when would bw the optimal time to go up for browns. What size fly rig to use. I have a 9 weight but if that's too big I also have a 6/7 that I used on Steel in Erie. I scanned the site for more info but didn't see much. Your help is appreciated.

I have a 9wt and a 10 wt that I use. Some might think that is overkill but I am comfortable with those outfits.Probably the most used weight is an 8 wt. You will still hook the occasional fish that you will not be able to turn. A floating weight forward line with a 8 -10 pound leader and fluorocarbon tippet is suggested. Most, but not all fishermen use a small float the majority of time. Egg patterns in salmon egg, pink, red and white and woolly buggers in brown and black are popular and produce. Hook size generally runs 10 -12 in egg patterns and 6-8 in streamers. Remember, you can only use one fly - no droppers. You cannot buy lead splitshot in NY so take enough with you. The best time is probably the last two weeks in October and the first week in November. Your big problem there will be finding lodging. Most annual fishermen make their reservations for next year before leaving this year. The stream is bigger than the Erie tribs so be prepared to make longer presentations. Generally it is accepted practice that once you claim a spot it is considered yours until you quit it. Etiquite is better than on the Erie streams. Unless going on the wall, very few trout are killed. If the water is right you will have a memorable outing. Good luck !

Thank you Catch, I appreciate all of the info. I had spoken with Chartist over at the SR site and he had some great advice. Not really interested in keeping any unless it was a monster for the wall. Are the limits different over there than on the SR? I know in Erie it was 3 steel or any combo of 3. And the SR is any combo of trout and salmon not exceeding 1 steel.

The limit is the same as the SR with only one steelhead a day.

If you are really interested in fishing for the browns I would suggest the 6/7.
It will protect lighter tippet and that can be really importent at times.
Flies  size 12 to 8 for nymphs.
    8 or 10 for eggs.
    6-8 for buggers.
Streamers in size 8 thru 4.

I use a 7wt for Oak Orchard browns and Steelhead.  If you can only afford one outfit right now, then an 8wt would be my suggestion as the 7wt is just a tad light fishing king salmon.  10wt would be fine for musky and Alaska salmon.  9wt is great for lake run kings but too much for steel/browns.
