I agree, no reason to gill him, his NAME is on the pic you posted. I suggest writing the "biologist" a letter to educate him on how to handle a fish. I would assume that's not his first gill job

this may be much ado about nothing.  in larger fish like this you can lift the fish by grabbing it under the jaw and OUTSIDE of the gills.  i land large pike and walleye like that regularly.  and anyway, lifting a large fish with your fingers in the gill cage is a **** good way to draw mots of blood - from both you and the fish.  it's just not clear from this photo where he's holding the smallie.

Phish is right. On a fish that size he probably isn't even touching the gills. You can safely grab the fish by the gill plate and not harm the fish. I'm guessing you've never caught a big musky or pike? That's how you grab and hold them without harming yourself or the fish.

Very true, but I wasn't gonna say anything. Thought the gill blasting police would come after me...

Ya I've caught big walleye pike ski, but its a smallmouth. Theres absolutely no reason to hold a bass regardless of size anywhere near the gills. Why risk holding it by the gill plate when it can easily be lipped?

very simple - "lipping" small bass is just fine but as they get bigger their body weight can cause the lower jaw to actually lock open or even break - mainly when the fisherman bends the jaw back excessively in order to hold it's mouth open - or to show off for the camera how big the fish's mouth is.

this is a photo of a waterways biologist - I would "guess" that he knows a lot more than any of us about how to handle fish.

Better would be one hand in the mouth for control, the other hand underneath for support.
