Minnow problems

2 Questions, one about keeping a minnow trap safe and the other about where I can buy some. I had someone steal my minnow trap on Wednesday, possibly a few young kids who didn't know better, but there were a few other adults that may have taken it. Just wondered how far away do you guys put your traps from fishing spots that people may be at? Also is there any where around Monongahela to Maxwell Lock that sells minnows? The only place I know about is in west elizabeth and that is 20 minutes out of the way, just wanted to know if any one knew about any out that way.

First, the absolute BEST bait shop is Shadlure in West Elizabeth. Dan is an honestly true fisherman and a great source of knwledge on that area.

As for your trap issue, I've come to believe that a well placed trap should produce results in about 30-45 minutes. If you get a good secluded spot to leave overnite--great, but that is when the thieves are sure to arrive.

I won't set a minnow trap at a fishing spot unless I'm there fishing. Go to a smaller stream or away from a stocked area of stream.

If you are going to leave it, set it as dusk and be there before dawn to retrieve it.  Even then, you can't be sure it will still be there.

    Set out a trap trap.

Obvious locale for thieves.  Tie a rope to a piece of junk about the right weight, but before you do, run the rope all over some poison ivy.

I always just put it in a small stream on my grandfather's land. But that's way out in the middle of nowhere. I understand how hard it must be if you have no streams like that.

Is it legal to have a minnow trap hanging off your boat while anchored and fishing ?

I don't see why it wouldn't be. Unless there's more than 50 minnows in it
