black or white?

I just watched this weeks episode of (Jimmy Huston Outdoors) they were fishing for Crappie in Missouri,he was holding a nice dark colored male spawning Crappie which he explained was actualy a (white) Crappie even though it was so dark. Now, I may be wrong but noticing that it was speckeled & the number of spines it had I am positive it was indeed a spawning male Black Crappie. Anyone else see this show? What do you think if you did?

Crappie are pretty good fried up.  I can't taste the difference between black and white...  If it looks big enough to fillet, it is thrown in my cooler...

Sam, I have always had trouble telling the difference too. If it's more black, I call it a black crappie. If it's lighter, I call it a white crappie. I'm right at least 50% of the time... lol

Like they said above, if it's over 10.5, I eat it. I don't discriminate between blacks and whites. I love them all.

If you look at the PF&B id pamphlets or anything on the net you can see the difference. White Crappie have a vertical stripe pattern while the Black Crappie have a predominatly speckeled pattern. Also the spines on a white are usualy 5-6 while a Black usualy has 6-8 spines. The confusion comes mostly during the spawn when the males of both species are very dark. Very hard to tell the difference after they are dipped in batter & fried.  lol  sam
