Mamoth fishing derby

Westm'd Cnty Parks will be holding a FREE fishing derby tomorrow 4/28/13. The State stocked Trout to-day I think. Also this is a chance for you Carp fishermen to show us what you got. There will be prizes & trophys for several species. Also door prizes & a 50/50 drawing. The derby is from 8am -1pm. The Westm'd Cnty Sportsmens League will co-sponsor the event.  sam

Guess we all ought to go there instead of going to church. Maybe someone can hold services there.

Fished there this evening. Landed two trout on paste and a bunch of milfoil and grass on a Little Phoebe.
Any reports on the derby results? The carp in particular.......

Sounds like the Commissions "Weed management" worked well!!! Lol. Also, 30.25 carp is pretty nice. I've seen some big ones but never caught any...

My personal biggest from there was 31" and 16 lb. Mostly cookie cutter 6-8lbers though from what I've seen.

Thanks all for the replies. I've caught carp up to about 24 lbs from Mammoth. Some nice mirror carp in there as well. The past 4 years or so have been so weed choked though, that I've not really been back. Sunday's trout trip convinced me to stay away even longer.

Too bad, it could really be a nice little lake w/o the weeds.

There are very large carp in that lake, but the last time I visited a few years ago the weeds had taken over. I remember reading this article in 2011 that said Mammoth had weeds covering 100% of its surface. Have things gotten any better since?

The PFBC's weed management program of drawdowns and sometimes herbicides doesn't seem to have worked well anywhere that I know of.

About 25% of the lake is about 8' deep. That part never gets weeds to the surface. The lake can be a bit tricky to fish due to weeds, but I like that about it. The area I carp fish is very shallow and doesn't have much weed growth, even in summer.

I fish Virgin Run a lot. Last year they repaired the dam. I wished they would have done more to kill the weeds in the lake. I was there once this year and it is still weedy.

I read something on the fish commission's site about the failure of winter drawdowns at Virgin Run to do anything about the weeds there, but for the life of me I can't find it now. I haven't been out there for years, but when I fished it weeds weren't much of an issue. Things seem to have changed majorly.

I believe that the worst prob. with weeds comes from the fact that most of the prob. lakes are fed from streams that go through farms carrying silt & fertilizer with them. As the silt makes the lakes shallower every year the weeds increase. Herbicides are too expensive & drawdowns only work for a while. This years drawdown at Mammoth didn't work because the lake kept filling up as soon as they would lower it. The money that we raised to help treat the lower lake at Twin seemed to help so far. You can see the difference at Twin Lakes, because the upper lake is fed from underground, there are much less weeds than at the lower lake which is fed from 3 farm streams.  sam
