Spotted Bass?
Does anybody know if there are spotted bass in the Mon? I caught a small bass today that had red eyes but the colorings were similar to a largemouth. I'm having trouble identifying it. Maybe a largemouth with red eyes? I never caught one with red eyes before though.

Yes there are spots in the 3 rivers usually a lot whiter in color than a largemouth and a spot on their tongue or outside gill plate

Tons of em, a lot of people do mistake them for largemouth because the color pattern is a lot the same. Some will have red eyes during spawning season. At the Mon I usually catch as many spotties as I do smallies every year. Here's a pic of one my friend caught last week and another of one I caught last fall.

The more that I think about it, I think it had to be a smallmouth with very light/ green coloring. It almost looked like it had a smallmouth head on a largemouth's body lol. It's good to know that there are spots in the Mon though. Thanks for the responses.

Definitely a Spotted/Kentucky Bass. The quickest way to identify them is if it looks almost just like a Largemouth, but the rear edge of the mouth does not go past the eye, it's a Spot. I get quite a few of them in the Ohio, and the South end of the West End Bridge used to give up lots of them.

Hate to hijack this but what are these? if you know. I thought the first was a smallie not having caught to many, but the eyes, and the second was thought to be a largemouth, but the eyes again.

Thanks for the link man, I thought the top was a smallie, just wasn't sure, but the bottom, after seeing this thread, got me wondering is it was a spotted bass

I would post a pic but some people would probably criticize the way that i'm holding the fish and I don't feel like dealing with them.

You learn something new everyday. I was always under the impression that only rock bass had red eyes. I caught a few last year in a stream that had red eyes but were bigger than a normal rock bass. I just assumed they were rock bass though.

I've read things that say the red eyes come in spawning season, but (1) they weren't authoritative sources, and (2) I've caught them with red eyes well out of spawning season. It seems to be something like a genetic variant, or something based on habitat or maybe diet. I'd say a bulk of the smallies I've caught have red eyes. Some have a brownish eye. The fish commission's site says: "The smallmouth’s eye is orange-red." Smallmouth can vary quite a bit in body color, from deep bronze with vertical stripes to a pale green totally devoid of pattern. It's usually best to identify species by things other than color alone when possible. Rock bass have 5-7 spines on the anal fin and a black spot at the end of the gill cover. They also have one solid dorsal fin, while the smallmouth has a bit of a dip in the middle of its dorsal fin.

I was gonna say that the rock bass that I have caught have different dorsal fins than the small mouths that I have caught. The red eyes on what I know now were small mouths kinda threw me.
