Lake Simcoe Report
Just got back (8.5 hour return trip!) from a quick run up to Lake Simcoe. I fished between Snake Island and Fox Island. There is a solid 8 to 10 inches of ice. I didn't see any cars or trucks, but snowmobiles and four-wheelers were all over the place.
Got up Wednesday night, fished all day Thursday. Caught over 100 perch, a herring, and saw a huge northern cruising beneath me. I kept 33, most of which were over 10 inches, and several pushing 13 inches. I could have easily limited out by adding 8 and 9 inchers to the pile, but I've got so much fish and venison in the freezer I was really being picky.
Caught most on jigging Rapalas, orange, chartreuse, and silver in that order. Caught some on Genz Worms tipped with maggots. Caught some on something new for me - Bento Baits. Fish just went nuts like a beehive when I dropped it down the hole but I haven't perfected how to rig it just right.
Got blown off this morning. Visibility at day break was maybe 50 yards on the ice, the parking lot I use was plowed in and so I aborted Friday fishing and crawled back home - 20 to 30 MPS all the way back through Canada and Buffalo. No relief til I got to Dunkirk/Fredonia around 1400 hours.
Will be heading back up soon. The long range forecast up there doesn't look like it will be making much ice, but I think it will maintain it. Hoping for fishing through March.
I'd post pictures if I could figure out where that stupid button is to do that!!!!
