Attachments are not available: Download requirements not metLittle boy and I got soaked after school yesterday.  We both played hookey today and saw one doe early this morning but no shots.  Afternoon hunt was the ticket.  Two doe worked right toward our set up.  1st shot clean miss, follow up put deer down.  She got back up and hit the brush.  Waited 45 minutes and found her about 15 yards in brush.  Smokey's sticks here we come.  If anyone could assist with posting pic please send me a PM with your cell # and I can send you the hero shot for posting.

    Mopar,
I agree, I am very thankful for this new program.  I hope your 7 year old grandson picks up the sport, my son just loves hunting and is sad we aren't on stand now! Maybe chase some squirrel this afternoon.

Had a blast this year.  We have had allot of practice with youth squirrell on movement in the woods and staying still.

On our doe hunt, No shots were fired on both hunts.  The first hunt, my 9 year old learned what buck fever feels like..and passed on the shot.  On saturday, my son woke me up at 5:30AM in the morning to claim his revenge(had no plans on going in the morning).  That afternoon he had the opportunity and learned to control his emotions. He needed one more second, but our cover was compromised and big mama ran away.

This programe is awesome for those who want to put the time in.  I don't even care to hunt on my own, Its fun to watch his enthusiam.

Sounds like me and my 8 year old son hummer.

We saw a nice buck Friday evening, but no does.  It was running through a field though, so the excitement level didn't get too high.

Saturday evening, we had a real close encounter.  We were set up in the corner of a field.  The deer had been coming out of another corner, but on this hunt they decided to come out right where we were.  And we were on the ground, not in a tree stand.

A little skipper broke from 2 older does, and walked within 7 yards of us.  It made us out, but the other two didn't alert and they were browsing about 25 yards back into the woods.  My son was locked on them, and I could hear him breathing!  He kept whispering, "Dad, I can't stop shaking.  Dad, I'm shaking.  Dad, I can't stop shaking."

Tried my darndest to move, get the shooting sticks set up and get him a shot where the two bigger ones were, but we got busted.

That was his first mentored hunt experience for deer.  Took him out for squirrels a few times last year, but he still hasn't made a kill yet.  He is absolutely hooked!

    Great program indeed!

    Hey JEB,

Thanks for the pointers!  The problem I had was when I compressed the photo I saved it as a document pic, not a web pic...which was over the allowable size.  Good luck this season and congrats on your daughters first squirrel!

I love reading the stories.  Taking my 10 year-old daughter out next year.  After coming home with a 10 pt. on Monday - she wants to be out there with her Dad so that she can get one also.  Any recommendations on a caliber for her?  I understand going "light," but I think she may be able to handle a 7mm08.  Also, open sights to start or go with scope?

    Thoughts??????????

Thank you in advance for your time!

    Grendel,

My son who just turned 9 is one of the biggest kids in his grade (4'8 and 85 pounds), and is doing very well with a .243.  It's an older Winchester model 70 Featherweight - made in 1953 - and although it's a featherweight, it's not quite light enough for him to handle well unless he's on shooting sticks or resting his front elbow on his knee.  I also had him learn to shoot a Marlin 336 30/30 last week and he did just fine with that too.

He is a bit of a worrier by nature, so he was very concerned about recoil because he did not like the recoil from an old 20 gauge single shot I let him shoot last year.  He has no problems with the recoil from either the .243 or 30/30 and he does not flinch when he shoots them.

I have no experience with the 7mm08, so I can't compare.  But I do know he's not yet ready for a .30/06 yet.

Thanks rsquared - my initial thinking was along the lines of a .243.

.243, .257 Roberts, something along that line would probably be pretty good.

I am going to go with one of the single shot interchangeable barrel guns with stocks that can "grow" with the shooter.  I'll get the 22lr, .243 and .410 or 20 ga shotgun barrels.  Figure the single shots will make them shoot straight and we can use it for multiple species.

    Grendel,
I think one of the most important things for kids is to find a gun that fits them well and that does not hurt them when they shoot.  I am very happy with the Mossberg Youth .243 that I bought for my son. For the price (~300.00) with a scope you can't beat them. Plus I threw a Limb Saver recoil pad to soften the blow even more.

I would have her shoot through a scope, but that's just my feeling. He started shooting a scoped Davey Cricket .22 when he was around 4 and now finding his target in a scope is second nature.

Good luck if you take her out.

Thank you all for the information.  Her excitement level is high and I am hoping to maintain that by doing the right thing.  I bought her a nice .22 with open sights and she does well so far.  Might get a scope on it next to get her comfy looking through one.

Thank you very kindly once again.

Grendel, check out the TC Encore. It's a single shot with interchangable barrels. The stocks on them are really short so they fit kids and females (and short armed dudes like me) very well. Try a 243 or a 30-30.

Thanks slabdaddy - will do.  Heading to Bob's Army Navy and Grice's next week.  I hope they don't try to sell me another .45 ike they did last week when I went in for #6's!  My candy two stores indeed.

Bring her up and let her throw a few thru Bill's .243 and see how she does.

Well, after yesterday evening's hunt, here's another great piece of advice.  Teach her how/what it means to track a deer in her scope - after you've determined that it's a legal deer of course - while it's walking so she can shoot when it stops.

The absolute biggest buck I've ever seen while hunting in PA stepped out of the thick, nasty stuff last night and was walking on a beeline towards us.  As soon as we saw him, I told my son, "Get on him through the scope."  He either didn't know what that meant, or had buck fever too badly, that when he stopped for about 6 or 7 seconds at 35 yards, he was not ready for the shot.

But dang, this is some fun stuff taking out a mentor.
