A 5wt set up is already too light for Erie Fishing.

Call Fish USA and they will help you order the proper tippet in 3x, 4x and 5x sizes.

I swear by RIO for both leaders and tippet....i also go with straight fluro all the time...especially in the low/clear conditions that are often found in the tribs...this past weekend i was using 2x leader tapered to 4x at my flies....pretty sure fishusa sells everything you would need as previously mentioned above.

Leave the furled leader at home.

Buy some 9' mono and flouro leaders and tippet to match in 4x through 2x. All of the major brands work fine.

I have used a furled leader the last two seasons steelheading. I use a small Blackbird swivel to which I attach my tippet. I nail knot the furled leader to the fly line. My usual rod is a 10' 7-wt. I make my own furled leaders, and used them this year fishing dry flies, with moderate success. In the past when fishing Erie, I would tie my own tapered leaders, usually out of Maxima using double surgeon's knots to taper the different sized leader material. They were fine, but I like the simplicity of the furled leader. I rarely use a float, I have gotten to where I can weave in a colored indicator into the furled leader. I don't go through as much tippet as I used to before the furled leaders. I am going to experiment with P-line this season as tippet, but normally I use Frog Hair, both in mono and flourocarbon.
