Gander Mountain Guide series flyrod.

I went to GM last night and was poking around the flyrod section and handled a few of their guide series rods and liked the feel of them. unfortunatly, I did not get to look at them too close as my wife reminded me that we were in Erie to shop for my daughters birthday.... do any of you use them? What are your thoughts on them? I am looking into a 6wt for steel and I may be mistaken but I swear I read somewhere online that they have  a 10' 6 wt.  They don't have their descriptions or even the flyrods online so I am hoping that someone out there can give some imput either way. I am looking to replace my moderate action Okuma, i'm not thrilled with the action, it's too slow for me and feels dead. Plus it is an 8 wt.....  For what it's worth, I have a GM guide series for one of my musky rods and I love it (it's my favorite setup) but let's face it, there is one heck of a difference from Musky rods to flyrods......thanks for the help!

It should function much the same as any mid-level imported fly rod out there.  It will catch you fish.

I don't have the guide series but about 4 years ago I bought a 10 foot  3 piece that was one of their Plateau ? series I think.  It was on sale and I bought it and I like the rod though I don't use a fly rod up there much anymore.  It was a 6 weight I think.  I believe Loomis gave you a pretty spot on read on it.

Some of the GM blanks are made by St Croix.

Though not a fly rod, I had a 6'6"l action spinning rod, guide series. Broke it on my second trip on a carp. I was not overly impressed w the rod. They replaced it for free, but were out of them, got a lt action lightning rod instead, not crazy about it either.

My $50 GM noodle rod is much better than my $250 Lamiglas

St. Croix does do some OEM stuff for many companies, but I wouldn't consider them a St. Croix.

I have owned 3 Gander Mountain rods and all 3 have broke in several sections and rather than owning up the warranty in-store I had to ship and it cost between 25-60 per rod. Not worth the hassle, I would look into better rods such as a St. Croix or invest in a lower end Loomis. Fly rods are much different then other rods you need the best to be the best with drifts and other applications

I have the GM rod in question and have had no problems with it. I like it.
As far as the GM rods breaking....well it happens but I'd bet that 90% of the breaks occur due to operator error. As far as them and the warrenty not being taken care of in house, thats probably company policy.  You have to ship the St. Croix and Loomis rods back for their warranty work.

I'm positive the higher priced rods are better but for the kind of steel head fishing done in Pa trib's I think any moderately priced rod will do the trick.  Usually all I'm doing there when I do is a fly rod is roll cast 15 to 20 feet.  Also as someone who usually goes swimming there at least once a winter season I would sooner break a medium priced rod then a real expensive one if I fall on it.

Kind of like buying autos, where some are happy with a Ford but some want Mercedes.  They will all get you there, just with a different ride.

Don't you know it takes a minimum of a $500 rod to dangle 15 feet of line over an Erie drainage ditch?  Without that level of investment, the stream just wont flow properly.
