Freshwater drum, aka sheephead.  Some people consider them junk fish, especially on Lake Erie.  I have no idea why, they're fun to catch.  Very underrated fish.

Never happened to me, but I've heard from other guys too that they croak.  I"ve had catfish croak at me though!  I guess it has something to do with certain bones rubbing together in there mouth or something?

    Gaspergou!

Definitely a drum.  They are related to the croaker and red drum.  Most consider them a garbage fish, but from what I have read, they taste just like a croaker or red drum, which are very good eating.  Check out gaspergou recipies, they love them down south.

I caught one below Lock 3, about 5 years ago, that was about 30" long and 15lbs or so.  It was a beast.

Appreciate the input guys. I just had my rod out with a nightcrawler and the drag started going. Photo makes the fish look fairly small, but it was a decent size and fought hard for its size.

Also, if you decide to eat em, they have a pearl-like deposit in their head. If you cut in the right spot it comes right out. some people have even made jewlery out of em. they are called otoliths and are actually part of the fishes ear. Crazyness!

Don't try it! I filleted one a few years ago and fried it up. It was absolutely disgusting. Inedible. Besides, they are all bone. There is more meat on a 14" crappie than there is on a 25" sheephead. They have a ribcage that's as heavy-duty as a catfish's. They are fun to catch, but DO NOT EAT them! LOL!

That is an awesome bit of information, right there. I'm going to check that out. Thanks!
