Gamelands ?

Can you gather Leeks on the PGC Gamelands ??

Saw another thread where they were gathering leeks in the ANF and that seems to be legal from what I can find.
Not sure if the PGC had different rules or not...

    Just FYI,
A certain store here in PGH that I was at yesterday was selling wild PA ramps/leeks for $14.99/lb and they were sold out. If I weren't so lazy, I could have asked how much they could take and dig several bushels of them. They are all covered with 16"+ of snow and counting right now though.

And last weekend, I did see an individual that was stopped along the road in a gameland heading into the woods with a cardboard flat and a garden shovel. I'm guessing he didn't know that he couldn't dig for them either? I didn't know. Figured they fall under a "mushroom" type category.

I am heading up to the ANF area tomorrow for a week of camping and we usually try to pick a few while we are up there.  Just out of curiousity, will this blizzard they are getting right now have any impact on the leeks?

If it is as bad as they are calling for I am not so sure that we will be heading up tomorrow anyhow.

When I got up this morning I thought Warren County was going to miss most of the fun. Apparently it just took a bit longer for it to get here. Not much in the valleys yet but it is sure piling up on top. I wouldn't want to be camping in this unless It was deer or bear season and I needed tracking snow. Bring your cross country skies if you have them.

With my vaca already slated, there is no turning back now.  Besides what else am I supposed to do until the walleye opener?

At least we won't have much company and we certainly won't need much ice to keep the beer cold.  We just may not have any leeks this year to munch on

It would be illegal to remove leeks from the game lands. I have never heard of anyone getting cited for digging a few for their own use though. Digging large bunches of them or sell them would certainly be frowned on though.

Wait... You mean to tell me there's an unclear or contradictory game commission law. That just can't be.

It also says you may build a small fire for warming purposes, but if I saw a small hunting party around a fire I would call that a campsite. It's all a judgement call for the officer. I know of someone who was cited for littering after returning a rock to the shoreline. He had been using it for an anchor after his original was lost to a snag. To my knowledge this guy and the officer had a bit of a history, but everyone has a bad day every now and again. You're better off asking permission from a private landowner or finding other public land where it's permitted, just in case the local PGC officer is in a "mood".

Not a problem here finding Leeks.
Have a patch out back that could feed us all.

Was just curious as to the PGC policy on harvesting.
Rsb's explination sounds resonable, not really a citeable offense unless you are going to an extreme...

Not leeks. RAMPS are what your looking for? I grow leeks in my garden.Ramps are in the lily family. The whole plant is edible, leaf, stem bulb. A little strong raw but I like early ones, cooking them sweeten they up,fried potatoes and ramps, wild turkey breast stuffed with morels and chopped up ramp bulbs butter and white wine. It's a wonderful spring meal fit for a king.

WILD LEEK =RAMPS but leeks are leeks you grow them or buy them at Gaint Eagle. I'm sending for ramp seeds and planting them in the woods behind my house this fall.

It's a region terminology. In the North they are called leeks, these parts we call them ramps. Same plant. In fact if you look in the Peterson Wilflower Field Guide I don't believe you will find a mention or reference to ramps, leeks however are covered under white flowering plants of the lily family.

Or, depending on the person, you can smell the leeks (ramps, whatever) they ate for three days and not smell the person.

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.

Yep, if you are going to eat leeks you better make sure anyone you want to be close to also eats some or they will not be able to stand the way you smell.

My dad used to make leek bread, the same way you make garlic bread by chopping up leeks, putting it on buttered bread and baking, as a side with spaghetti. It was darn good and did help to tame the leeks down a bit.

Friends and I picked a slew of them the other day in NY on another Foresters property. He has tons of them and would like most of them to disapear. I think he figures they impede his timber and regrowth. They sure are good with eggs.I'm also going to try to pickle some.We got a mess for the Clarion rod & Gun Club. Next saturday they are going to have a ramp-leek shindig. We came out of the woodlow with 2 feedsacks 3/4 full. Lets see
    40 lbsX $14.99/lb= $599.60 - $30.00gas- $500.00 lost wages-Eating out and dozen beers $80.00= -$10.40. Typical outdoor adventure. Would someone
please explain to my wife it financially wasn't that bad of an adventure, she will not let me get close to her. Um Um these ramps are even good
raw with a little salt. I'm going to try dipping them in Red Hot or with some limberger on toast or,,or,or
