Your local fly shop, whatever that may be, should have a general hatch chart for the waters in your area. As long as you get the wing style right -- sailboat vs. tent; the color close -- dark vs. light; and the size even closer -- a #14 will not do if they are feeding on # 18 (or #16 for that matter). You should be okay. While it is nice to know the genus and species and all that fun stuff, it isn't really necessary. Even the UFA has a Latin name for those that insist that you be able to determine a Ephemerella Invaria Rotunda from a Ephemerella Dorothea and that would be erectus masterbatus maximus.
