I'm kinda curious what parts of PA didn't have deer in 1980...
Any old deer density maps around ????

All counties had numerous deer in 1980, some have increased in numbers and some have decreased since then due to feed, predators, private ground, and related hunting pressure. Statewide we killed more estimated bucks in 1986 than in any year since 2002. I can get deer harvest by county prior to 1986 but can only get early deer density charts for about a dozen counties.

With 1.6 million deer in Pa in 1980, you couldn't swing a dead ear tagged coyote or grey wolf without hitting one.

From my fogging recollection, deer were just as dense, about the consistency of hardened jell-o, in 1980 as they are now.

Hunted Warren CTY in the late 60s and 70s the deer were heavy - nobody mentioned Ticks. Hunted down round Jim Thorpe ( before it was Jim Thorpe) in the mid 60s and there were lotsa Deer down there too. Nobody mentioned ticks during the Deer season down there BUT everyone taped their pant legs and sprayed their ankles while running Beagle Trials  in the warmer months.
Yea Deer - like all warm blooded thingies- carry ticks around during the warmer months then the little freaks turn to mice during the winter.
Since some ticks carry Lyme there is some truth to Deer being involved just like everything else out there.
You guys can argue bout why Deer got such a bad rap in your state but gotta realize ALL the states were saying the same thing and it was a big deal in ALL the states just like yours. This controversial guy ALT wasnt here in CT where the whole disease started either but we were gettin the same story.
In fact it may have started here cause of the initial disease investigations as to how it was originated and spread were HERE where the disease was first discovered..
Bout half my family has taken the cure and  lost some good dogs to it too early on before all the shots and oils so I know about how scary and serious  Lyme can get.
Did they carry the whole thing too far in PA or not would seem to be the only real issue.
BTW -While that Deer dont carry in WINTER thing is true but how bout the crop damage Deer kills and the early Bow season kills -all in warm weather. Gotta be cautious with ALL game in that weather from tree rats on up.

The simple point is that the PGC couldn't spread the word about deer/ticks/Lyme quick or wide enough when it provided a good excuse for HR and when it was discovered that that wasn't the case there was deafening silence.  If their media machine was good enough to spread the gloom and doom in an effort to promote HR, it should have been likewise as good, and quick, to spread the good news that what they once believed was false and deer were not the primary, majority, even minority cause of Lyme disease.  It just didn't work that way.

Know exactly what you mean DAR- Distinctly recall those early reports of mice and Deer bein responsible- Have NEVER read anything else bout any other creatures.( an I aint from PA)
Gotta remember though that the Deer are still actively involved in the life cycle of the Ticks- just as other warm blooded creatures are too. As far as being a major cause of the spread of Ticks because of Deers large home ground one would have to wonder even more bout things like Geese and Yotes IMHO.
Now I suppose somebodys gonna say somethin bout killin off all the Geese an Yotes-  I'm in on the Yote part.

Per the PGC Biologists in 2008-----A three fold change in deer numbers DID NOT change the risk of Lyme Disease.

I had 2 ticks on me this week, maybe I am a carrier. Go ahead, HR me....WF..You know, the majority of the people I talk to aren't happy with the lack of deer; they must'nt be Pa residents.

I'm hip to the Geese part. Filthy flying vermin that they are.

That is one critter where I would agree that more is not necessarly better. They don't even eat that good although goose jerky and a cold beer ain't bad. Goose jerky and 3-4 beer is even better.
