Hooksets and couple questions
Ive been doing a lot of nymphing and seem to have learned alot from my buds but one thing I'm have trouble with is losing fish that I should not be.
I had around 10 today pull out on midges and sucker spawns. I set the hook and keep the tip up.
I use a very light 6 wt, these are stockies. I'm looking to get a 3 though. Would the faster action on my 6 wt have something to do with it or is it just part of the game?
Also, anybody have any ideas for a good 3 wt. I'd like 8' plus pole and very light rod

i have a 3wt 7' Hardy demon that i like when fishing small streams. it has a quicker tip action than most medium to slow action rods i've tried. i can wrist cast with it avoiding a slower extended back-cast which is less hazardous in brush lined creeks. my son has a wright and mcgill 3wt 7'6" essential and likes the action it has.

Could be weak hooks. Gap might be bending open.

Try offsetting the hook point to the shank, particularly the midges.

Good advice. Also, if you're fishing downstream, hook sets are a little tricky compared to across or up where the hook hits the corner mouth. The reason I mentioned weak or opened hook gaps is that last week I had 3 consecutive fish come off before I realized that the hook gap on my fly got bent open.

thanks guys, and funny you mention that dano, cause when i drift downstream like off a current break i almost always get a better hookset than compared to upstream

sharpen ur hooks. i lost a couple on a stream in the highlands recently. when i checked my bottom nymph i realized the hook was dull as heck.

I'm curious about the hook gap question. I sharpen my hooks fairly often. However, last year I got a fairly slow three weight. I started wondering why I was fishing that three weight so often, but I realized I was getting more fish on it. This year, I built a slower 5 weight to see if the slower action resulted in more hook ups. So far, the difference is minimal, but the season is young.

My hooks are pretty darn sharp, I just went through and filed then and noticed the gaps are a tad offset to begin, so we'll see what happens this week.
I was looking at a ll bean stream light II cheap and have good reviews. Anyone own one, hopefully KJH gives an input, he seems to be fairly knowledgable with a good amount of poles.

I have an excellent 9' 3 wt. for sale. Check the Fly fishing gear for sale section. . Small fish will shake or pull off a stiff fly rod. Small hooks , no give. Charlie

Your glass is half full. Getting them to take is the fun. Now you don't have to touch them and both you and the fish are happy.Really though,sharper hooks or offsets will indeed help. Maybe some may be foul hooked,happens sometimes.Lots of steelhead experts lose fish because of foul hooking and then say they don't ever foul hook fish...WF
