If you look closely at gray squirrels you will find that they often have different colors behind their ears. Some will be all gray but others will have white, cream or one of the various shades of peach color behind the ears.

I suspect it has to do with genetics but it is kind interesting to note the variances.

Your right Doc they are very entertaining. We have a group of 6 or 8 grays at work, right outside the cafeteria window were we take our morning breaks there are a group of pine and oak trees, they entertain us every morning running and chasing each other. I swear there is a couple of them you could saddle and ride them.... there horses!

Look to the heavens and thank God everyday that hunting is such a grand part of our lives.

Thre are so many different color variations of the grey squirrel you could see most anything on occasion. I've seen all black, all dark grey, half white, tail white, and all white as well as mostly reddish brown. Also, when they change from winter to summer coats and back again anything is possible.

I think most of the time the white ears is their winter fur. I'am feeding a couple that way now. I would agree that it's probably genetics as some areas I used to hunt them seemed to have more of one particular trait than another area. Never really gave it much thought before.

Do Greys interbreed with fox squirrel? I swore I shot a half & half. Could be that summer/winter coat thing.

I don't think they interbreed but don't know that for sure. Probably what you saw was a brown or reddish phase grey. They look a lot like a small fox squirrel. Usually when ever I've seen a lot of fox, ex. Ohio and Illinois I don't see greys. I doubt I've seen 3 dozen fox squirrels in my life in Pa. They may be in some locations but not the areas I roam around in.
