How to tie jigs???
I was wondering what hackle they use for these kinds of jigs (mini foo is one brand that makes them). I've made marabou jigs, but I have no idea about these... The jigs can't be any harder to make than hair jigs, but I have absolutely no idea what kind of feathers you would buy with that length. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Deer hair feathers? I didn't know deer had feathers I know it's hackle, but it's **** long. I don't know what kind of feather you buy to get an 1 1/2" - 2" hackle!

Thanks buddy!! If I pick up "strung saddle hackle" from a shop online I should expect it to be the right size? Is the same thing used on wollybuggers? Thanks again!

Among the strung feathers, strung neck typically has longer fibers than saddle. It's easy to tell just by looking at the bag, though, so just check them out when you're at the shop.

Thanks! I'm going to get them online. The closest shop to me is hours away. That's why I have problems choosing.

ORIGINAL: verbatim Thanks buddy!! If I pick up "strung saddle hackle" from a shop online I should expect it to be the right size? Is the same thing used on wollybuggers? Thanks again! These "mini-foo-type" jigs are tied with an inexpensive and stiffer hackle. No matter what strung hackle you buy, size will not matter. How the material is cut/prepped is the key. Take a single hackle/feather and hold it at the base with the tip pointing towards the ceiling. Using only the very end of your scissor tips, snip away at the center quill in 1/4" increments. Be careful not to cut the barbules. This will leave you a bunch of v-shaped segments and these segments are what you will tie in. When I used to tie 100's of these, I would cut dozens and dozens of hackles and place them in small bags arranged by color. Black, white and black/yellow were, and still are, my favorites. Good luck.
