Shenango River / Photo mix

Lower Shenango River, or the Sluces , has always been a great fishery . Fortunate to live with in miles of the Tailrace I spent over 40 years fishing this area. Little has changed in that time span. Now my son as well as other younger fishermen get to enjoy the experience of great river fishing. Wading has always been a true enjoyment of sport fishing for me. The challenge of fishing current water flows and battling fish in stronger conditions on light tackle is the ultimate enjoyment. One thing I always enjoyed about Shenango is that you never knew what you might hook into ! Here are a few photos of our home base.....................

That place has been on my to-do list for years. Hopefully this year I'll be able to cross it off. Thanks for sharing.

Cold, you get up to visit again we'll add that as a spot to our weekend fishing outing. It's not to far from me so we'll hit Pymy and conneaute one day and that the next. I have caught some nice bass and like from down there. Really haven't targeted anything else so it's been on my list to target more species.

The worst day hunting or fishing will always be better then the best day at school or work!

+1 In the summer there I've caught Smallmouths, largemouths, crappie, gills, perch, white bass, hybrids, cats, eyes, carp, suckers, pike, a rock bass, a green sunfish, and I even caught a trout in July two years ago.

Not trying to brag it up just like taking lots of photos and posting for others to enjoy. We are very fortunate to have this variety of fishing in our back yard. Here are more Shenango photos over the past seasons for those of you that never saw Shenango River.

i grew up fishing the river and above the dam in my younger days. brought back memories, thanks capt.
caught lots of channel cats, trout and the occasional huge carp in the river. caught my first crappie on a popper in there. first walleye on a fly rod! actually canoed from the dam downsteam a good piece. caught huge fish we couldn't even get to the boat.

I've been camping up there for the past 6 years and found the river to be an excellent place to catch just about anything that swims. Over the years my dad and I have caught everything from muskies to bluegills. I even caught a turtle the day. We mostly fish the other part of the river, near Big Bend. We usually just take the canoe and paddle along with a rapala out the back. This seems to work for every fish in there...including a very large carp about 2 years ago. We found that the river is a great smallmouth fishery from our campground down to the Hamburg Rd bridge, then it seems to just shut off after that til we get to Big Bend. I catch tons of wipers out of the river, as well as the lake. All in all Shenango is an awesome place to fish.

Captain I'd love to know what you use to catch the walleyes. That's the one fish I just can't seem to catch and you seem to really know what you're doing. Nice fish!

I remember fishing with my dad there in the late 60s and early 70s it was one of his favorite places to fish.  We had some great times and caught a lot of fish. I was from about 8 to 12 in that time and we used to sleep in the open bed of the truck. Dad had Monday and Tuesday off so we had the place to ourselves on summer nights. I still get up there every once in a while and I like to take my son when I can.  I hope when I pass he can remember the great times that you have had with loved ones on the water and he will pass it on to his kids.
My dad passed away in 1972 when I was 12 and I will never forget the times spent hunting and fishing so to all you dads out there take your kid or a kid fishing to build lasting memories.    Sorry to ramble but those photos brought back both happy and sad memories.
