Green weenie

Anybody have any luck with these, they're supposed to be killer and this year being my first full year dedicated to fly fishing, I wondered if they're worth tying? They seem very easy. Thoughts or advice?

Yes, they kill on stockers. I like to use one as the lead fly and drop a small pheasant tail off of it.

just like many flies there is a time when they are killer. the GW should be in your box and used often. it is very similar to a caddis larvae or pupa flies tied much more elaborately.

I use them year round and catch fish on them year round. Like said before the stocked fish go crazy for them. I out fished 2 buddies 5-1 on a few occasions using the green weenie.

Wow I didn't think it would get these testimonials, I'll definitely start to tie some up with a blend of the versions I can find online to make a mega green weenie haha. But even early Europeans used them for the brown trahts so they got to be good

I use mustad #9671 nymph hook in sizes 10 and 12. Lay a base of thread down on the hook shank starting at the head and going back to the bend. Pull of some of the chartreuse chenille fibers exposing the white core string, approx 1/4". This will reduce bulk when you tie the material in. Form the loop and bring the chenille forward and whip finish. You might want to tie some in black, red and tan.
yes, I came up with this fly nearly 30 years ago. I gave it it's name from the late Pirate announcer Bob Prince. Who used to wave a dill pickle (green wennie) to put a hex on opposing teams.

They work. I always have some in my flybox. Some with beads. Easy to tie.

I dont fish the weenie often, but it is a money fly on Penns. Good panfish fly too. For panfish I add three rubber-leg antenna.

Now that you know it works, the question is: to add the loop tail or leave it off? Greg Hoover of psu used to correct people all the time over the nomenclature of the name. I think the weenie is with the tail, if it doesnt have a tail its just an inchworm pattern. There you have it.

I first saw the green weenie in the late 1960's - early 1970's while fishing at Fisherman's Paradise. It was nothing more than standard size fluorescent chartreuse chenille wound around the hook shank of a #10 2XL and whip finished with black thread. Those hatchery trout went nuts over it. All you had to do was get it in the water -- neither drag nor drift was critical.

We've always attributed the name to "The Gunner," Bob Prince, and his Heinz pickle hex he'd call up with the fans at Forbes Field and the early days at Three Rivers. It paved the way for "The Terrible Towel."

Here's a little history: Green Weenie

Prince may have been controversial from time to time, but he sure was entertaining and a die-hard Pirate booster. They broke the cast when he came out of the womb.

I tie some with a tail, some without. Can't really say if it really matters one way or another. I think it's more a matter of color and size. Fish are not all that bright. If something floates by that looks edible and they are hungry, they will usually try and eat it.

Our local Gander Mountain stocks plenty of chenille here in southwestern PA.

You might try them if there's one nearby, but generally any shop that sells fly tying material will have chenille.

Oh yeah, I remember it well!!

That link I provided is the Wikipedia biography of Bob Prince. It's well done and lists nearly all of his expressions and nicknames for various Pirate players over the years.

Just as good if not better than the green weenie is the "honey bug". It uses a different chenille than the green wennie does. It was started by Paul Berger and trademarked. Then my wifes great uncle bought it off of him. It is dyed all different colors and comes in two sizes of material. The first evening I fished with them about 15 years ago I caught over 30 trout. Great for panfish as well. The material is hard to come by but it is avaliable.
