Old Bamboo Rod

A few years back I inherited my grandfathers old bamboo flyrod. From a small piece of the sticker that is still left on it I have identified it as what I believe to be a Montague Fishkill rod paired with a Shakespere automatic reel. The rod isn't extremely valuable, but is more of an heirloom. I have never flyfished, but I love to wade and think it would be a great experience to get out and do some shallow water panfishing with small poppers, stonefly patterns, and this piece of my family's history. The wood seems to be in fine shape, but the guides could use rewrapped. Does anyone know where I might be able to take this rod to get it refurbished and back in working order, or if it would even be wise to try and use it.

Those Fishkill were one of the better made Monty Rod models.

Take it from an old timer...The best thing you could do with that Montague bamboo rod and automatic reel, would be to hang them up on your wall. The rod is probably 9' and with the weight of the automatic reel, way to much for an enjoyable day of fishing.
The auction sites are loaded with used graphite rods and good quality fly reels. Look for something around 8' for a 5 weight line. I would think for 200$ on up, you could get a decent starter outfit. If you have specific questions, shoot me an e-mail..

Thanks for the replies guys. Will have to get a hold of on of the above mentioned people and see what the damage to the wallet would be to have it fixed. I really don't plan on becomming an exceptionally avid fly fisherman, but my father and I go wading for bluegill on fathers day each year, and thought it would be a good time to take the bamboo with us and give it a try. It does have quite a bit of weight to it, but would rather put some money into this rod and use it on occassion than buy a new outfit.
