    Cant beat live minnows for crappies. But I will also troll for crappies with small crankbaits.

    Agreed. Started using small blade baits and spoons more through the ice last year, and started hitting alot more fish. As for spring crappie fishing, I like small plastic jigs with fine tails that have a slight flutter, or marabou jigs tipped with minnows.

    Other than minnows or jigs under a float, smaller deep diving cranks(10-12ft) trolled have picked me up quite a few big fish. Especially when a mudline kills the action up shallow. I have one rapala and one from Norman lures that are absolutely killer. All my crappies over 14" have come on trolled cranks.

    If they are in the shallows I use a flyrod and use a varity of foam bodied offerings. One of my goto's is a green foam spyder with white rubber legs. A fellow I used to fish with used a heavy Hopkins jig in deeper water. He did quite well that way.

    On the ice;
    I prefer a medium fathead hooked with a small treble under the dorsal hanging from a deadstick. (small splitshot about 12" up)

    In the spring;
    I like a medium fathead lip hooked with a gold aberdeen hook at the appropriate depth under a slip float. (again, with a small split shot)

    In the summer and into fall (if I can find time to fish them in the fall);
    I like to either troll hot & tots for them or work a Charlie Brewer Crappie Slider in the brush.

    1" Gulp alive minnies a couple feet under a float with a small split shot and a small flo. orange or flo. yellow octopus circle has worked well for me sight casting to the crappies in the shallows. When you can get live bait, the gulp seems to do the job pretty well.

    Have read alot of good things from chauncy on this board and others about the microspoons. Might finally have to give them a try this year.
