Pedestal Base

Hello, I am thinking about buying a pedestal base for fly tying. The prices range from $25 on up. My vice was around the $30 range. Should I put the money towards a better vice with a pedestal? Does anyone know how to make a pedestal that works well?

Thank you for your opinion,

If you need the upgrade on the vice, not a bad idea. I have a permanent set-up with my vice clamped to the table. I also have a pedestal to use when I travel. Sometimes it's hard to find a place to clamp a vise- the pedestal takes care of that. The only thing I don't like about the pedestal is my scrap collector that hangs below the table edge  only works with the clamp. The pedestal base has to be heavy, at least 1/2 inch stock. If you have access to the stock and some metal working skills, it's easy to make one. In a pinch I made one out of wood. Too light. A fair amount of vices use 3/8 rod, make sure your clamp and pedestal  is the same if you wish to use both.

i only tie on Pedestal... i really see no upside to a clamp

you could make a base out of anything... just measure the vise stem for the hole dia and have a screw to tighten
while weight is important, also think surface area off the front

we make custom bases out of granite to any size and shape also on larger ones we can drill for tool holders but people most of the time put good vise in these for the investment
