    Al,
Not many people fish it in the winter because you have to park on Rt 6 and drag your gear down the access road a bit over a half a mile.  That said, it usually freezes up fairly early as long as the snowfall isn't too great, which right now it's not.  I haven't been there to check the ice, however, so I can't give you much insight into conditions there.

They used to draw it down a bit, but I honestly haven't ice fished it in years, so I'm not sure if they still do or not.

did you do any good when you did ice fish it? Never even thought about trying it to tell the truth. would definately be a one rod and bucket trip since the gates closed.

Yeah, did pretty well on gills and the occasional small 'eye.  I was never able to really find the slabs even though I used to do pretty well on them in the spring there.  IMO, it wasn't worth the hike.  Other lakes get earlier ice with better fishing.  The nice thing about it was you pretty much have the lake to yourself.  Also, with sketchy conditions, it's a long way to get help or walk out if you're dunked.  There seems to be a lot of current in there, so ice thickness always seemed to be variable.  Be safe.  If you go, take a buddy.

I canoed it in March one time. We put in ten miles up and planned to take out at the dam, but the last mile of the river was frozen solid, so we had to walk accross an ice tundra and drag our canoe up into the woods and walk back to get my truck. I wouldn't call it a "lake" or a "reservoir." Its really more of a wide spot in French Creek. There were sections with three feet of air between the creek and the ice. I don't think it would be a great place to ice fish.

    RC,

You are talking about the Union City Dam.  It is dry at normal pool (creek channel in middle) and only holds any amount of water during highwater periods.  It is fed by French Creek and is off of Rte 97.

The Union City Rez is off of Rte 6 and is fed by a very small stream (not canoeable) It is about 100 acres I would venture to guess.

Fished the Rez and below the dam during open water, but never through the ice.w_w.

If it has fins and gills, I'm there.

You are correct. I'm a dolt. I thought they were talking about the one on French Creek...

Naw, it's a common mistake.  They're only a few miles away from each other.

The rez is almost 40 acres (fish commision website), very small. Never ice fished it, like many have already stated it is a hike to get to. Also it is all up hill on the way back.
