New Flasher

I recently posted a WTB thread on the Miscilanious fishing gear section about wanting to buy a cheap used flasher. Well, I was blessed to come into some cash as an early Christmas present and last night I found a really good deal on ebay for a new Marcum VX-1 ($250.00 w/ free shipping) so I bought it. It should be here by the middle of next week and I'm anxious to get out and try it out. From everything I have read both on fishing forums and manufacturer's websights once you fish with a flasher you won't ever go ice fishing without it again.

I had spent some time looking into the Vexilar FL-8s and really liked what I was reading about them but, I also liked the bottom lock zoom feature that came with the VX-1 but not on the FL-8.

Do any of you use a VX-1? How do you like it? Did I get a good deal, or make a bone headed mistake? I'd love to hear back and get your opinions. Thanks.
Tight lines & God bless.

Few things here. First and foremost, it's too late to base your decision on what others think. You already made the purchase. Second, it really doesn't matter what others think about your purchase. Your opinion is the only one that will matter anyway. And third, any flasher that YOU can afford is the right one. All of them will help improve your fishing. Stop worrying about it and take your time and learn how to use the one you have. It may not be the best one made but it's the best one you have. Use it and enjoy your ice season. Christian brother to christian brother.

Eman, there was a lot of 10 of them on sale on ebay yesterday for $249.99 with free shipping and handeling. When I bought mine last night around 9:00 there were only 6 left but you might check and see if any are still on there.
    Good luck!

I have the same thing but mine is under the Gander Mt logo.  I have had no problems and really enjoy using it.  I especially like the zoom feature if they are still made the same way.

I fished pymy for years without one, and would luck into a fish or 2 every year.  I bought a vex last year, and caught double digit fish each trip.  I didn't get skunked once last year no matter where I fished.  I will never, and I repeat never fish without a flasher!  I'm used to fishing with tip-ups and being 1-2 feet off the bottom, and jigging the bottom.  I couldn't believe how the fish were suspending, sometimes at 8' or so in 20+ feet of water.  Plus you can see if the fish want quick, slow or even no jigging action.  It was a complete turn around to my hard water fishing and it was money well spent.  You will not be disappointed with a flasher and won't forget to take it with you (I have forgot my sled with all my other gear (don't ask me how) but didn't forget the flasher. Luckily I only live 5 mins from pymy).

Thanks for the input guys. I feel pretty confidant that I made a good purchase, the majority of the reviews I've read had good things to say about Marcum, and the price was better than I'v seen them anywhere else. Now i'm really looking forward to getting out with it and putting some fish on the ice.
I guess all I need now is a power Auger and a shelter, and a good set if Ice Fishing outerwear, and a snow mobiel and ...

Any use/care /maintainance suggestions for an flasher newbie?

I suggest that at least once a week after there is safe ice, you take it out on the ice and chill it down for at least a couple of hours. This can then be followed with warming is back up while you clean, cook, and eat your catch for the day. (You can use it while chilling the unit.) Then with your fish greasy fingers, plug in your charger and try to figure out a way to go back out in the morning.

Good deal and great purchase john. Any time you want to go let me know you can join up with me and I got the power auger and the shanty. I can't wait for the ice. These warm days are kinda getting depressing. I just ordered a few new jigs and some spring bobbers from yourbobbersdown.Com. I am finally getting that shanty back that I was going to trade ya so possibly I might be able to hook ya up with that. As soon as we get any safe ice around here ill let ya know. Pick up a couple of tip ups because most likely we will be hitting the small waters before the bay for perch. Hopefully we get good ice cus I also got a snowmobile so we don't have to drag the monster shanty all the way across the ice.

From what I hear you are supposed to let the battery go 100% dead before you charge it. When I come home I will leave my power on but the actual vex off and drain the battery then charge it completely.

Well my VX-1 Pro came in the mail today. I felt like Ralphie unwrapping his Daisy Red Rider BB-gun!

Not that I have alot to compair it to, but it looks like a great, straight-forward, easy to use unit.

Now I just need some ice so I can get out and start to get the hang of this machine! But looking at the weather report it doesn't look like that is gonna happen anytime soon.

I got my strike indicators from your bobbers down yesterday and put them on this morning. I just might have to take the ice poles out on the Jon boat to try them out.

If you have any docks in your area, take it out and use it. Practice setting it up to see your bait. Even if you dont catch anything, you'll still enjoy using your unit. Congrats on a fine purchase and i hope you get many many years usage out of it.
