44 mag lever gun update
Took that 44 mag lever gun out today and shot factory loads. I was bustin bullseyes out at 100 yds with it. So as it turns out, it was the reloads that were sprayin the bullets everywhere the last time I was out with it. Come to find out the guy who did the reloading, does it in mass quanity. Needless to say, I'm ditchin that ammo. BH

A buddy of mine has a old 44mag lever also. it looks just like my 3030 well till you see the end of the barrel LOL He was shooting 240gr's until he tried the 180gr It is a heck of a difference, and quite more accurate. Dave

I was shootin Winchesters 240 gr. bullet. Dialed it right in with that ammo. Switched to Hornadys 225 gr. ammo, without any adjustments, and was hittin 1/2 in. high at 100 yds. Talked with a guy and he said that the 44 is hands down the best brush gun out there. We'll see. As it's usually my job, during the non-pressure days, to get the deer movin. BH

You will like that gun.It has a lot of knockdown power,If you hit a deer anywhere on the body it will drop.

BH As far as the best brush gun any bullet will deflect when hitting brush. Such shots should be avoided if possible. Good luck hunting

Or push down on the bullet to make shur it is seated onto the brass? BH

push down on the bullet to make shur it is seated onto the brass? Recoil with a tube feed may cause them to push in. I prefer a jacketed bullet but make sure it is flat on top or next shell in tube may go off.

Your Right bout the Hollow points- had jams when feeding using them often enough to go to shells with hard projectiles rather than soft hollow points. The only exception that regularly fed well without 'issues' now and again was a jacketed soft point with very little lead showing at the tip and a small flat spot on the tip. That one fed very well with no objections over the years. Hit hard too.

I got Hornady's Lever Revolution ammo with the plastic tip. Are these no good? Also have Winchesters lead, flat topped ammo, which would you prefer? BH

Used those plastic tip things in other ammo- was OK- dont see where it cant be fine in the lever gun too.The flat tip is the one I landed on but that dont mean its the end all.

I'm no ammo expert, but IMO hollow points are the best choice for hunting/sel;f defense. I don't understand why someone would want to use a FMJ bullet in such applications.. I want massive damage, not pass through.

Hey Drake- We were talkin bout the hollows pertaining to a lever gun like the Marlin using those .44 rounds. Some of us have had 'issues' with the hollow points jamming and / or not feeding properly in that scenario and have had better luck with flat nosed projectiles in the past. Personally had a number of similar ' issues with the hollow points and never with the flast nose shells- as long as the flat is not that real big one and is limited to a smaller flat area. Some flat tips are so large as to jam just like the hollow point. Might agree with Marty here- as long as the hollow point is a small area it does not tend to jam like the larger apatured ones in that gun. There has to be a noticeable taper on the nose of the shell or issues may well occur. It is a great fine shooting little gun.

Have used that 240 and the 'taper' was sufficient so as not to jam.

The jacket opens up like petals and does more damage than lead
