Keeping your weights from sliding
Started fly fishing a couple years ago again. I was at 20 mile last week for the first time this year and had a heck of a time keeping my weights where I wanted them, they kept sliding down to my fly. I use 5x seaguar grand max for a tippet and about every 20 or so casts I would notice my sinkers would slide down. I tried pinching them tighter and tighter so they would stay but I would just break off at that point on a hookup (I'm sure because I was crushing the line so much). What you you guys do? I was thinking about running the line through the weight twice but thought that would probably make a weak spot also.

I am not sure I ever found a fluorocarbon leader that ever liked split shot. Shorter leaders, end split shot above nail knot, use a beadhead or wire under body, fishing really deep use a tungsten bead.

many different solutions for this one, but I attach my tippet to my leader with a blood knot. Place your shot above the knot. Problem solved. Also, some may even use a swivel instead of a knot-(heathens!), place your shot above the swivel.

As Loomis mentioned, fluoro has a hard-slippery finish. Try an overhand knot around a water gremlin lead type with tabs. You can pull the knot loose with a pin, hookeye cleaner or any thin object.

i use lead match sticks. pinch it down and it rarely slips. i also do what riverbum says and tie on the length of tippet i want and put the lead above the knot. swivel on a leader?? might as well throw rooster tails and cleos while your at it!

Blackbird shot is very soft if you pinch just the open end w hemos it kinda wraps the shot around the line,

I have tied an overhand knot in the line. The spilt shot doesn't move past it. I haven't had the line break, yet. Usually, put the spilt shot above the tippet knot I tie on.

I've never found water gremlin to slip so much; but dona's advice with the weight behind the blood knot works like a charm... swivels???? Who cares if anyone thinks its taboo... it definitely will serve your purpose well...

Sometime I step down my leader (i.e. heavier to lighter) utilizing a knot tier which is fairly easy and quick and then place the sinker above the knot!

leave extra long tag end when you tie on fly, attach shot to this with the knot technique above... this will suspend your offering just off the bottom. I also do this when running tandems TruST mE k

The best shot is dinsmores egg shot. Stay away from the cushion shot, it slides too much. The plain egg shot doesnt slide. I've tried super duex, boss tin, and the other shot made for fly fishing, but nothing compares to the plain dinsmores.

Your suggested set-up is similar to "chuck-n-duck". Never used it on any Erie tribs but quite often in Michigan for Kings. Use of bar lead with parachute casing reduces the snag effect.

To add..I do not pinch the dinsmores very hard. They have a coating that I believe grips better when not pinched too tight. (and no damage to the line)
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
