gun help

I'm currently in the market for a semi auto gun for ducks and geese. Can anybody tell me if this would be a good buy, the Stoeger model 2000. Also if any body has suggestion on a semi auto like a Remington 11-87 or a Mossburge 935. Any imput would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance Blaze

I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

The stoeger 2000 is good for the money, dont be surprised if you run into a problem or two down the road with it through. 11-87 I would stay away from, for the money remington wants for them, their not worth it. I know there is a million remington fans out there who love the 1100 and 11-87 but I've seen way too many of them go down in the field, especially late season. Remember the 2000 is a 3" gun. Might want to check out the new stoeger 3500, 3 1/2" gun with the problems of the 2000 supposedley worked out. Priced around $600-$650. Another in that price range that I think is a better gun is the Franchi I-12 along with the Beretta 390-1. Both 3" inch guns that are good quality. Stay away from the moss 935, their junk.

The Lord has blessed us all today... It's just that he has been particularly good to me.

Lots of good guns out there. You just have to go look and handle them. Everyone likes something different. I would have to agree and say that buying a 3.5 is the best choice. I own several Rem scatter guns and haven't had any problems. The last was the 11-87 Super Mag 26" VR full camo. No problems at all with 3" or 3.5's. Pm me and I can tell you you has the best prices on 11-87's.

The 2000 and the 11-87 are completely different. I believe the 2000 is lighter and uses an inertia system over the gas system of the 11-87. I always clean and relube my auto after a hunt so build up is never a problem. Also if you are planning on the 3.5's less recoil felt due to the 11-87's weight. I have dealt with Remington service centers before and was quite satisfied. On other thing to keep in mind. Compair and handle before buying.

i had a mossberg 935 for about three years and never had trouble with it except when i first bought it and it was down around zero and it wouldnt cycle i tore it completetly down and removed the factory grease and never had any more trouble with it but if u ever wanna shoot low brass shells i would go with a different gun cause they will not eject these shells but i have heard other guys say they have had problems with them so u may wanna stay clear and remember if u buy a semi keep in clean cause they all malfunction if real dirty

Your going to have problems with ALL MID PRICED SEMI'S,I shot 1187 for years, great turkey gun but not a goose gun.I shot a ton of geese with mine but had problems too.Bought my son a stoegers 2000,it shot a foot low out of the box,put true glow bead on it and wor4ked ok for about 5 years then problems. The truth is stop kidding yourself and buy a gun of a lifetime,I choose a Browning Gold about 7 or 8 years ago,and have never had a lick of trouble, nothing not even one jam,my son bought the new Berreta and it also works flawless, throw them up and bang,bang.bang.These guns can take all you can give them.

Whoa ! Browning Gold 3.5 Shadow Grass is somewhere around $1200. compared to a 11-87 Super Mag in camo for under $600. I'm sure you are looking hard to see what gives you more bang for your buck.

Almost $1300.00 when I bought mine 28 in 3 1/2 shadow grass. My sons Berretta was $ 1500.00 not looking too save money. You pay for what you get.People keep buying mid priced semi's LOOKING FOR THE ONE. After buying two or three ,there still looking.I'm done. I'm not saying the mid priced guns don't work for the average waterfowler but if your going to burn 20 boxes a year at geese go with the right guns.

Its all good if EVERYONE could afford such. Todays luxuries are limited for many due to the obvious. I was only giving my opinion as to a semi in the neiborhood of what he was considering.

One would agree to someone who been there with saving up for your last gun.  I have been thru a mossburg 500, remmington 1100 mag, super mag 870 and last 10 or so years I have been using an X2. But we live and learn.  I still have the ole realiable 870 supermag.  One may ask oneself what would you rather have... A reliable pump or a skechy mid grade auto in the cold ducky weather?  I used my 870 till I saved up the cash for the X2.

I will say the Berretta A-390's are a nice 3" guns.

    Good Luck on your choice.

Everyone states some good points. Big Tuna is on the money about buying a few mid priced semi's before realizing you should of bought one good one. Its just like duck and goose calls. Most people will buy 10 polycarb calls for 30-40 bucks when they could of bought 3 acrylics for the same money and would have them the rest of their lives. Honestly, shoot a rem 870 until you save the money for a SBEII, Vinci/Super Vinci, Brown Maxxus or a Beretta Extrema. If your just too stubborn to hunt with a pump and wont spend the money than definetly go with the beretta 390, franchi i-12 or stoeger 3500.

I have had a Moss 935 for 5 years, I am very happy with the gun. I clean it frequently and do not have any problems with jams or cycling.  As someone mentioned, it will not cycle very light target loads, but 2 3/4 high brass will cycle fine.

Keep in mind that function is only part, albeit an important part, of the shotgun puzzle.  A shotgun that functions everytime is important, but useless if you can't hit anything with it.

Fit should be an upmost consideration.  Since your eye serves as the rear sight of a shotgun, not having a shotgun that fits is like having a rifle that is not zeroed.  Not all shotguns have the same stock dimensions, nor do even those wth the same drops at heel, toe and comb and length of pull fit the same (larger or smaller diameter grip that shifts your grip, thinner or thicker comb that moves your face; cast on or cast off, etc.).

To find a shotgun that fits, wear what you will be wearing when you hunt a majority of the time -- in this case, your heavy waterfowl jacket.  Pick an object on the store wall and instictively mount the gun at that object.  Do this at severla objects at several distances.  When the shotgun meets your shoulder and face, the bead should be visible and very close in proximity to the object you want to point at.  If it is not and oyu need to adject to see the bead or bring it inline with the object, the gun does not fit and you will constantly shoot wher eit is pointed, not where you want to.

Once you find several that fit, then decide on function.

Best of luck and let us know what you come up with.

I think it really boils down to passion for the sport. A $2,000 gun that sits in the closet probably wasn't the best buy. Buy the best you can afford and hang on to it.

In my experience the later model Brownings are a bit overpriced for what you get and won't hold up as well as some similar priced Italian guns. When I bought my "gun of a lifetime" (to quote an earlier poster) I did a ton of research and was ready to buy a Citori, until I talked to a good friend that shoots a TON, both a clay and feathered birds. His gun got hot enough while hunting doves in South America that the forend release actually branded into his leather glove.

He showed me one of his Citoris pointed out the wear items on the Citori and what it would cost to repair if/when they needed it. Then he showed me his Beretta and did the same, there was no contest and I bought the Beretta. Granted, I'm talking about over/unders but the principal holds true. Now that I've said all that, my all time favorite grouse gun is an Ithaca Mod. 37 Ultra Featherlight 20 ga., go figure...

I'd look around for a good buy on a used A-390, they're out there...

    Good luck in your search

I went with the a model 2000 stoeger in a hp real tree it has a 24 inch barrel for the purpose of faster swing, gonna be my waterfowl gun.

    I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

Barrel lenth may be a problem,I love short barrels on upland game bunnies and birds but ducks and geese I would have choosen the 28 inch barrel. Your hp real tree finish will wear off in a few years(my sons did) and I hope you get on to the wierd ( loading and safty) these turkish guns have. Good luck with your gun. Make should you pattern it on paper with steel shot also the chokes that come with the gun are not steel shot chokes,Learned the hard way,a trip to Gander Mountain gunsmith, the mod. choke seize to the barrel and had to be tooled out.
