fun stuff--

Lets do some light stuff for this forum -till a hijack of course- just to keep it light during a time of some uhhhhh lunacy on the water -might help some of us stay reasonably sane - for now--

First- love that guy who talked to Tuna bout the foul hooked fish.

Second- did I see what I thought I saw on that Cam  the other day??? and If so cant wait to get back up there- fishing is certainly gettin more exciting.

Third- story from last year- Old guy makes repeated trips to stand right in a King spawn bed every time they came back to it.- all afternoon affair over and over.
Had bout 4 feet of line with a #1 and little green bead hanging off his rod tip/Peering into the bed looking to sang one- course he scared them off every time walking in.
Dumb luck took over and as he bent to peer into the bed his egg dipped in behind him and an Atlantic Salmon took it right down the throat. He insisted it was a Steelhead and he kept it to mount. Bout 20 inches too.
Tried to tell him real nice but he got huffy-

I'm going to lobby for a salmon bowhunting season. Flu-flus so it can't ricochet far, and one and done per day.  Thin the crowds out. No tangles, no giant snarls of mono, salmon  are run or done. How about Sat. anything goes? The rest of the week lifting is a 5,000 buck fine .  Marbles allowed , no trebles.  On the other side of the coin- Spey play is limited to Wed. morning. You can froth your 50 yds of river to your heart's content without whackin some poor kid with your telephone pole. After all, it's like that old BK commercial- a  Whopper takes two hands....

Not the SR but a small trib story.
78-9 this old guy, polly young than I am now, walks in and plunks the head of the run I'm fishing.
    He's got a 6 footish rod and a Zebco 33 classic reel.
Giant weight seated snuggly on the bottom with a puffball the size of a medium egg waving back and forth on the surface since it had not gotten warerlogged yet.
    I'm thinking "this poor old s o b doesn't have a clue.

So doesn't a rainhead in the upper teens come to the surface and crusk that puffer.
Turned and headed for the lake taking the 50-60 yards of 20 lb he had on the reel and then just blew the 33 to pieces.

I have carried some kind of dry flies with me ever since.

Holy crap. Awesome stories. I wish I lived close. I would spend days trying to raise an early King before the temps turn...

    Now for the SR.
Fishing the old bus hole in the early 80s.
Guy belly hooks a nice steelbow.
His friend nets it, another guy says "nice fish can I get a pic", swell hero shot with the hook clearly in the meat not the mouth,
They throw it on a rope and the pic guy says here's your tickets guys, netter helped in keeping a snagged fish,"thanks for letting me get that photo for evidence".

Years ago there was a guy we called Steelhead Bob because after I put him on his first steelhead he became an instant expert.
Really a very nice guy just liked to talk alot.

One day I have him fishing the tail of the upper clay right under the sycamore.
He used to wear a cowboy hat which limited his vision both to the side and in front and above.
An osprey landed in the tree out of his vision.
After about 1/2 hour it plummets straight down hitting 8-10 feet in front of him, grabbing a steelhead around 8 lbs.
He stumbles backwards to the bank totally shaken.
    GOOD TIMES!

Now the rest of the story.
The osprey tried to fly but everytime it got the fish almost free of the surface the fish would dive pulling it back to the water. This went on for about ten minutes until the osprey figured out it could get a fish that big out and up.
It then used its wings like oars and swam down and to the north bank and was dragging it to the bank, still not having an easy time of it, when Fran Verdaliva, who was bringing 2 clients,he was still guiding back then, up the trail forcing the osprey to finally give up the meal and fly to safety.
Always hoped the fish survived but with those talons in it that long makes me feel it ended as a lose lose.

For the past 20 years or more Wife and I go to the Carib. every Winter for a week or two- Love to snorkel down there in the clear waters- Like swimmin in a Tropical fish tank. Actually better than fishin getting to see all the stuff  up close and personal -love to hand feed the fishies too.
Was in a big pool kinda waterway snorkeling and had a can of shiners on my belt with a rubber top and was hand feeding fish bout 4 ft. long- may well have been Tarpon. Big turtles too. .Apparently each time I reached into the can for another shiner one or two would slide out  and float around me.
Had noticed that there were little duck-like bird feet swimming around me but had not made the connection being keyed in on the fishes and sea turtles so much and having them take food from my hand and all.
All the sudden a Pelican grabbed onto my right ear and pulled HARD for a LONG time -musta thought it was one of those shiners. I mean this thing wanted that ear BAD-so did I . I eventually won the tug of war but it HURT - it Hurt a lot too. LMAO-gotta love it.

Years ago when things were bad, the years I like to refer to as the dark years "snagging that is". It was one of my first trips to the river and I stopped by the tressle to watch the circus for a bit. Of coarse people were lined up elbow to elbow both side of te river and two guys hook each others lines from the oposite side of the river. One guy reels it in to untangle the line at this time a group of fish enter the hole, the guy waiting to have is line untangled couldn't pass up the fish yanks the line setting the hook in the other guys hand and pulling him into the water as he went under and this pole went down the river.

    Similar act, same circus tent.
Watched a guy on the north side of the tressle overcast and hang a guy in the forearm, don't know if he didn't realize or just didn't care, but instead of letting the guy pull the hook he reefs and rips a 3-4 inch gash in the guys arm.
Some choice words were exchanged but in the end the guys friends had to get him to a doc instead of going around and beating the bastage to a pulp.

Yep , same Trestle hook and jerk  80's circus act for me- the last time I went sharkin' before this year.  The  incident  I watched ended in a major fight. The hookee actually waded across and went for the throat. He moved pretty good for a guy with a  chunk of lead and a hook in his leg. The hooker ended up worse. Good thing was  I think they were both feeling no pain to begin with...  I got one on a sack on a heavy bass/light salt spin rig with 15# in the Town Pool. Guy next to me had a noodle rod and a Mitchell 308. That was their  lower end ultralight. Having fished  one  when I was a kid, I asked the guy, isn't that a little light for these?  He said the rod would take all the punishment. Well, he hooked one  where it didn't really like it and  it took off up under the bridge and out the other side over 5 or 6 guys lines. That reel sounded like a cheap chinese blender. It started smoking and the spool blew off in pieces. I was going to ask him how the rod was working, but I kept my mouth shut. I wasn't always brain dead.

Trestle pool, south, last year. Drift boat coming down. One guy tells his buddy "throw right behind the boat, they make the fish move". Guy lands the the the largest spit shot I ever saw in the back of the boat. As he's yelling for the boat to stop it pulls him into the drink. Then the sound like a 22 followed by a standing ovation. He and his partner quickly left. I think even the Kings were laughing.

Friend moved ta Maine coupla years ago- says he will ALWAYS be the 'new guy ' and never be completly accepted cause he's an ' outsider'. Told him really dont know too many folks up at my place in Richland and his reply was -'dont worry --they all know you", "they always know all bout the  outsider".
Case in point-- Neighbor told me how I was known to have shot  real big bucks out backa my place. Told him all the deer had left my area for the past 3 yrs ina row just before the season and that I hadnt even shot a little one since I been up there. Get my Deer in Ct.
He  refused to believe it and continued to insist I had been shooting big ones since I got there.
Guess the Deer numbers must be down and they gotta blame somebody.
Thinkin bout bringing coupla nice CT. racks up there and nailing them to the shed where ya can seeum from the road. The myth must continue----

Got some great pictures here at home UGLY- only problem is that my hair aint the same  color any more on most of them- also might tip my hand a bit if iImake one up big enough for them to see while driving past. Horns on the shed will have the desired impact - ( probably get burned out).

Tuna I haven't fished the Trestle since 82-84 or so and that was for mid winter steel.
It is a GREAT place to eat lunch and have a laugh during the salmon season.
