Fly Macro

The old camera took a hit last month. No luck with Olympus in getting it fixed so I went with a Pentax WG-1. Still learning it but it's got some interesting macro capabilities....

Still trying to find a pattern for this..... or even if there should be since there all over the place right now. Makes my wife scream every time she sees one!!!

    Awesome photos

Nice shots! I think my favorite is the one of the tinsel tag.

Picked up a macro lens a few weeks ago and I've been enjoying seeing what it can do as well...of the following, only the last one is at true 1:1 magnification, though all were shot with the lens.

Dont mind the dust! It's just from sitting on my tying desk all winter! These macro shots really expose the flaws in my ties though.

Stink bug!! My wife hates them too. Some of my ties are about that ugly but not on purpose.

    Cold,
Beautiful pics. The hairwings are flawless. Floss work, tinsel, heads - everything. I gotta get a different back drop on my pics. Something in neutral grey so the metering in the camera is better. At least that's what I've always heard. I'm assuming your using a DSLR. I can see the difference between yours and my point and shoot. Much more pop to the pic. Thanks for posting.

Thanks guys. Steely, Those hairwings are older ties...I think I've posted them here before? There's some minor errors (the **** tinsel rib on that rusty rat waited till I was lacquering to slide off the back of the body ), but after several months, I'm still pleased with them overall.

As far as your backdrop, grey, blue, green...doesn't really matter, just so it doesn't distract the eye, and also does one of two things: provides a midtone for your meter, or provides contrast for your AF. I like blue because aside from synthetic streamers and steelhead/salmon flies, very few patterns incorporate blue, which allows the fly to stand out from the background a bit.

ray, I'm with you. I think he lacquered that stink bug's legs from the top pic.

Ray/Cold - yeah those **** stinkbugs....I just got back from the dentist - getting a cavity filled. As I was there in the chair - up on the ceiling was one of 'em crawling along. Kind of chuckled about it. The dentist thought I was choking.

Anyway - those legs were made from two different pieces of porcupine quill - cut to length and hollowed out with a sewing needle. Then  coated black with prismacolor marker and immediately wiped off leaving a mottled effect. Japanese nymph legs ( a material resembling bristles off a paint brush) were then inserted and a bend made on the japanese nymph legs between the two pieces of quill. Then coated with epoxy. A lengthy process for each leg.

Thanks for the tips on the backdrop Cold. I agree with you on the blue - just from what I've always read - a neutral grey color is what trues the meter. Although - I've never really tried it so I cannot attest to it. Like you said though I guess any midtone color would work and you certainly have more experience with it than I have. Thanks again.
