Redneck or Resourceful?

Sometimes you just have to laugh at yourself.

With the warming weather, the squirrels have been running around in wild abundance, leading to many a squirrel vs car contests. Haven't seen a squirrel win one yet.

I found one in front of my driveway, DRD (Dead Right There), and figured, "What the heck..." It hadn't been there for long, so I grabbed my knife and a pair of gloves, cut the tail off and threw it in a box (the tail). Realized the "street" value of my neighborhood was fantastic. So I took a ride (and a bottle of hand sanitizer) around the plan. Ended up with eight of them. Sick, huh?

So yesterday I'm out gettin' some tail and my cell phone rings. It's a buddy of mine..."Hey, where are you and what are you doing?"

"Um...why?"

"We a had a lady call complaining of a guy in a red SUV who stopped in front of her house and cut up a squirrel. Ran the plate...it came back to you."

I told him what I was up to...after about a minute of solid laughter (and incredulous disbelief), he cries, "Now I have to tell this lady that it was a redneck, not a Satanist...GREAAAAT!"

Maybe Suburbia isn't for me...

Redneck if ya skined them and ate them, resourceful if ya just saved the tail & hide.

Not to hijack the thread, but what if  you shoot starlings in your backyard for feathers with your son's bb gun?

I keep a few squerrel and pheasant tails each hunting season for tying. I put the cut end in a baggie with some salt and wrap a rubber band aruond it to dry them out.

Mo - now that is a good one!!!!! Thanks for the laugh!!!! Thing is though - I can remember doing the same thing but I never got questioned about it...... Very funny story!

    Good job MS..
Haven't taken that plunge quite yet but I've been eyeing this dead possum out front for a couple days now....

Kinda funny how it used to be just road kill now that I'm tying flies it all looks like dubbing and streamer material..

Black squirrel tails, Westfield, NY. Picked up a couple last year, natural black is superior to dyed for salmon or sthd hair wings. Pedestrian asked me what I was doing out in the middle of the road with a dead squirrel. Just told her I'm retired living on a fixed income.

We are a sick bunch. A few weeks ago I was on my way to work and saw a red fox road kill. I figured I would stop and "harvest" some material on the way home. I did stop, but someone beat me to it. Same thing happened with a gray fox same week! I wanted some porcupine quills for a mayfly pattern, and I actuallly put a pair of pliers in my daughter's car, as she travels a route to work that always has a porky or two on the side of the road. She wouldn't bite though, and ended up buying quills for me from e-bay.
