In the Beginning

Ran into my favorite rod builder today and he had a bag of parts for me. Once I found him.

Working on building my first rod.
Rainshadow RX7 8'6" 4wt.

Fitted my first reel seat and grip.

One tip for you other beginners, Don't slide the reel seat on upside down when you have the blank coated with epoxy.
Thank God I had the alchohol handy.

Thanks for the help Skip..

Couple pics.

OH yea baby!!! that looks sweeeeet!!!  I have avoided the temptation to start building rods....  Flies are a lot cheaper to make, and you don't get too upset when you mess one up....

Now all you need to do is slap on the reel, grab some flies, find a stream and have at it...  Good luck and I hope the rod will catch a lot of fish.

The 8'6" 4 wt rainshadow is a great blank. I've built both the 2 pc and 4 pc and they are both very nice. They are really good PA trout rods since they are light enough to fish great all day, but they have just enough power to throw on a WF5 and a streamer. In fact, it will be worth trying both a 4 and 5 wt line on it and see what you prefer. I liked it with a hefty 4 wt line, but if you're only fishing with 10-15' of line out you'll definitely want the 5.

This blank is also a great nymph/indicator blank for light nymphing. A tiny smudge of biostrike and a pair of #16's with a #4 shot is about perfect.

    Enjoy!

    Thanks
    Rick

Bings. Make sure you use a slow RPM motor to turn the rod while the epoxy/finish is drying. The first rod I build (many years ago)I put the finish on the wapping in the evening and when I checked the rod in the morning all the finish had saged to the lower side of the rod. Great looking rod!

Beautiful work Bing. Can't wait to see the finish! Hope you post some pics of it!

I like the green wraps...  Just in time for St. Patrick's day!!!  Now all you need is some good weather to get out and take it for a test drive or test fish I guess....  I bet you will be very proud when you land your first fish with this beautiful creation.  Good luck and post pictures...
