Fireline for perchin' ?

I'm curious if anyone has experience using Berkley Fireline in the 4 or 6 pound line for panfish.

I'm waaaaaaay behind the curve on this because I mostly fly fish when the ice is gone. But I do rig up for the rare occasion I use my spinning or bait casting outfits and have always had monofiliment. The properties and reviews I've read on Fireline intrigue me - I'm just wondering how it will perform for perch, bluegills or crappies thru the ice. I know one thing, at least you can see it!

If you can see the line, so can the fish. Not a good thing. The heaviest line I use for ice fishing(even Steelys) is 6 lb. Yes I have had a few break offs but I have also landed many bass, pickerel, and Steelys with 6 lb leaders.

I use two pound fireline and I've never ever had a breakoff. I would never consider going back to mono.

In long rod season I bump it up to 4 pound. If I absolutely have to, ill tie a fluoro leader on.

Hey SaltyDog...what color Fireline do you use? The green, grey, white? Do you use their specialty ice fishing line or the regular summer stuff?

I use the white colored ice line for ice fishing, and the smoke colored regular stuff for the long rod. The more I think about it, I'm pretty sure I use 6 pound instead of 4. It's been a while since put it on.

Better keep fresh line on them spools. All the elements damage line sun the most. I respool probably a lil much but I am sure it pays off....

As I understand it, that is supposed to be one of the advantages to Fireline - it is immune to UV, at least as compared to mono, so you don't have to change it as much.

So, Salty Dog, your observations are the fish don't see, or are at least not bothered by Fireline?

That would be huge for me - its is so cotton picking hard to tie knots - can't tie what you can't see!

Not the perch or steelhead under the ice. The only time I use a leader is when I'm rubber worming in the summertime on PI. I tie directly to a crosslock snap, then put on a stickbait, crank, or whatever. For perch, I use a sabiki.

Well, I've got all summer to play around with my spinning rods to find out what I like. I'll load one spool with my favorite line right now - Seagaur InvisX and one with Fireline and compare properties.
Then I'll be able to make a better decision when getting my stuff ready for ice fishing 2011/2012.
