Antler Mounting Kits

Decided to mount the antlers from the 6pt I got up in 2E to go at my parent's camp (can't have a camp without some antlers, right?). I don't have the spare cash, or the desire, to get a head and shoulder mount done for a 6pt, and I'm not crazy about the european skull mounts. There seems to be quite a few kits on the market for antler mounts, but most of them have pretty low reviews. I want to save money, but a kit that only costs 10 bucks just sounds, well, cheap. I would think the materials cost in wood and some decent felt would cost more than that. Anyway, looking for some input. Has anyone done a do-it-yourself antler mount in the last few years? Suggestions on brands, techniques, advice?

I looked at some local taxidermy sites, and none even advertise antler mounts, maybe they don't make money off them? Thanks in advance guys.

I think a do-it-yourself could be well under $10.  Get a nice piece of hardwood, cut to shape, staiin, and a scrap of velvet.  The nicest antler mounts I've seen were home made jobs.  All the kits I've seen were pretty cheesy looking.

You can buy a mounting kit, just use the wood and mounting brackets. I would mount the horns still attach the scull . just cut a v in the scull outside the horns, leaving enough to trim and make rack stand straight up. then use some plaster of Paris. to smooth out. then stretch some material. you could just about any thing you what really. I use black felt and looks pretty good. Here are a couple from a long time ago and still look good being almost 20 years old P.S. ignore the date just put batteries in the camera and didn't change the date yet. Dave

I like european skull mounts, just brings the whole room together

Board wise, the best cheaper ones I seen were at wal-mart for @ $20 a few years ago. Had a faux suede leather type cover and below the antlers was a metal relief of a deer that didn't look ****ty.

    BigHead: Those look great man.

Psu Fish: I was looking at the ones off cabelas and at the Gander Mountain here. While I want to avoid spending a huge sum of money, I'm just a little leary of a $10 kit. But, if people have had decent luck with them then I could give one a shot.
