DT - thanks for the addition and for taking the time. I love those prismatic markers - in fact I gotta get some more colors. Guess another trip to AC Moore craft shop! Thanks again. Love it!

Nice "Tute" for a killer, simple fly. If I ever put together a kit for tying on the go, this will be one of the patterns I make sure I'm able to tie.

Using the finger gloves is definitely much easier than the full latex gloves I started tying a few with. Still though, I never came even close to your perfect wraps. It seems so simple but can get hairy. You do a really nice job with 'em though.

Though I am Just a begining tyer, I tried this demostration. After about the third one, I got one that was pretty good, though not perfect like yours. IMO your caddis is a very life like representation. Thanks for the tute DT.

A local stream has bright green caddis larvae that build...cases...that are more like a little igloo made of stones on the undersides of rocks. They're really bright minty green, almost to the point that they look fake. Anyone have similar bugs, and if so, do you have a favorite marker to get that color?

Cold, tons of the caddisflies you described exist in the LJ and Big Fishing Creek. I never used a latex caddis to immitate them, so I can't help on the marker selection. I use another pattern that works very well for me and is insanely simple. -Start using a #12-18 caddis hook with a black bead -Wrap a thread base using UTC chartruese -Tie in a piece of micro-tubing -Use your thread to create a tapered body -Wrap tubing to the bead -Whip it off and go fish

The chartreuse thread ends up looking mint green? I have some stuff similar to the fly you describe, but I use green spanflex.

Not exactly the "mint green" you are looking for, but its certainly close enough to fool plenty of fish. I don't get caught up in matching colors exactly, especially for sub-surface flies. As long as the shade of color is close to what I am trying to match, I am happy. Size and shape are far more important IMO. There is some Uni-Stretch material I have that I also tie a similar fly with. The chartruese of that stuff is definately a near perfect match to the bugs in question. Even so, th UTC chartruese/tubing fly works better for me.

DT, This was a great tute, thank you! I tried a couple and they turned out ok but nothing like yours but with practice im sure to get better!! I was wondering where are all the places around the area I might be able to find these Prisma Markers? I like the versatility these markers give to a simple fly like this! Thanks, Bass

ORIGINAL: fishenfool46 bass micheals (sorry for the spelling) craft store has em they aren't cheap by any means but they carry them. +1 They need a natual colors assortment. The assortments are so much more cost effective than individuals, but they all have a bunch of colors I'd never use. I have light brown, olive green, and orange now.

Found my green. Nymph Stretch Skin. Caddis Green (of course). Nearly perfect match of what I was seeing. This one is tied big, size 10, but I'll probably tie most of them in #14. Squirrel dub in a dubbing loop for the head.

The Nymph Stretch Skin came in that color. The NSS is much easier to work with as well, giving you that great segmentation. The downside, of course, is that per fly, it is way way more expensive than the latex. Even so, for me, it's work the $3 or so for a little pack of the stuff...matches color perfectly, and gives a great segmented look.

Viagra Caddis, way easier to tie than latex bodies, and just as effective.

Easier? Maybe. One man's opinion. Way easier? If you get way easier than wrapping a piece of latex around a hook, someone else is tying them for you.

Way easier. No need to try and "taper" a thread underbody. It's darn near a San Juan worm, while latex takes some skill. I'm not saying latex isn't cool looking, nor that it's hard to tie with.

I dont taper any thread on mine, dUUd. Lead wraps, tie on latex, wind latex, dub head. Idk, if it is slightly easier to go viagra caddis, the realism more than makes up for it. Still not "way" easier, tho.
